QUESTION: I suffer from recurrent lactational mastitis,
seemingly as a result of an overabundant milk supply. I was
wondering if there are any special "diets" - not the
weight-reducing type - that could help my body to become
stronger so as to prevent my mastitis. Thanks for your help!

I am not aware of any specific diets
recommended to prevent recurrent mastitis, but I would suggest
that you speak to an International Board Certified Lactation
Consultant (IBCLC) about
this. I do know that a good, well-balanced diet should enhance
your immune status optimally and that trying to lose weight at
this time might affect your ability to fight infections. Lots of
fruits and vegetables - at least five servings of different ones
each day - is routinely recommended. Lots of breads and cereals,
modest amounts of meats, but two to three one- to two-ounce
servings of protein-rich foods or the equivalent, including
beans, eggs, cheese, fish, chicken and some red meat are
recommended.
These foods provide nutrients such as iron, zinc and B-vitamins,
which are important to overall health including the immune
system. Certainly milk and other dairy products will also
enhance your intake of protein, vitamins and certain minerals. I
suggest borrowing a Jane Brody book from a local library. Jane
is a science writer for the New York Times and does a
responsible job of discussing good nutrition. Your local county
extension service will have some good literature describing a
good well-balanced diet. This will not only help you, but also
serve you as a good role model for your children.
