QUESTION: Hello,
I am in the process of adopting. I am trying to re-lactate for breastfeeding.
I am currently pumping, and taking fenugreek, but have been told that domperadome will
speed up and increase my milk production. Could you please help me?
Hoping and praying,
Peggy

Dear Peggy,
Domperadome has been proven to increase prolactin levels in lactating mothers. (Success
in non lactating mothers is much more variable.) This drug is not currently available in
the US. It is listed as an investigational drug for nausea in end stage cancer patients at
this point. As you know it is currently used in other countries to help boost milk output
(not a listed usage in any county that I know of) -- along with appropriate pumping
and or nursing.
Successful relactation (did you successfully breastfeed before and how long) rates
vary as much as the number of stars in the sky. You did not state the reasons for
adoption, your physical history and expectations may affect your level of success.
Are you currently working with a certified lactation consultant in this process. If not
you may consider it a very helpful option.
You stated that you were pumping -- When is baby due -- How soon after birth are you
able to have the baby -- How often are you pumping -- How long (days - weeks) have you
been pumping -- What kind of pump are you using -- How much fenugreek are you taking and
in what form -- Are you feeling or seeing any changes in your breast
tissue? These
are all important questions that need to be addressed before starting to take a medication
for increasing milk supply.
I hope this is helpful for you. Please feel free to reply to my questions and we can
get additional information to you as needed
Sincerely,
Anne F. Norton-Krawciw, RPh, IBCLC
