8 Tips on How to Pack for Travel

Sometimes packing for a family trip can be so much effort, you're tempted to just stay home.

It can be a good idea to let older kids get involved in creating a packing list for themselves, then spend some time ticking things off, analyzing the space requirements, researching available space on airlines etc

Packing for a rail trip is similar to traveling by air, you may have a little more room if booking a sleeper car, but most luggage should be stored in baggage.

Traveling by Airplane presents some special travel concerns.

Here are some packing suggestions:

Limit each member to one carry on piece, while the size restrictions on trains are not as limiting as airlines, especially when travelling in a sleeper.

When traveling by air make sure your carry on bag is really a 'Carry-on'.  Airlines are becoming increasing vigilant in sizing allowances for carry on luggage.

Always bring along some snacks, toys and activities to keep children occupied.

Some rail lines now have activity cars that may offer board games, scheduled activities and even video games and movies.

Bring comfortable shoes and a change of clothing for each member of the family.

Carry all medication on board.

Pack a toothbrush for each member in carry on luggage.

Delays can occur so be prepared, especially if meeting a connecting flight, bus or train at your destination.

Bring all baby care items if you are travelling with an infant, including food, diapers and drinks.

Remember when flying, keep innocent but inappropriate items out of carry on luggage, this will help to both increase security and speed the flow of passengers through airport security checkpoints Check with the airline for a more in-depth list of prohibited items.

Banned items include:
*  Nail nippers, nail files, tweezers
*  Razor blades, whether safety or straight-edged
*  Pocket knives, Swiss Army knives, Leatherman type tools
*  Corkscrews
*  Scissors
*  Any cutter with a blade, retractable or not
