Breastfeeding a Newborn

Breastfeeding a newborn can be tricky (especially if you're a first-time mom), but that's why we're here to help. Wondering how long baby should nurse on each side? Not sure how to breastfeed a baby with colic? We've got the scoop.

Breastfeeding a Newborn: What you need to know

For first-time mommies (and even more experienced mamas), breastfeeding a newborn can be pretty tricky--and even a little bit scary. Here at Breastfeeding.com, we've got all the info you need on newborn baby breastfeeding. There's tons to think about, including when to nurse your baby, whether or not to wake baby up to breastfeed, how often to nurse and how much time to leave between feedings. And that's just the schedule! You're probably also concerned with whether or not baby is even hungry, how much milk baby is getting, and whether baby is eating enough...or if maybe he or she is eating too much. If you have a picky or slow eater, baby pulls off your breast, or baby is losing weight, we'll help you out with that situation. Supplementing with formula is always an option and we'll tell you all about that. We'll also let you know what to do if you have an overly excited milk monster for a newborn. There's also always the question of which breast to use and for how long on each side. Sometimes, babies show a particular affinity for one breast over the other. If you feel like your breastfeeding is uneven, we've got help for that. And of course, there's always the question (slash nightmare) of what to do with a colicky baby. First, our apologies. Second, relax. We'll help you through the whole process of breastfeeding a baby with colic. And remember--though it may not feel like it right now, this period will pass.
