Allergies & Breastfeeding: What you need to know

Allergies, especially in this day and age, are a scary thing to think about. Allergies while breastfeeding? Even scarier. If baby is allergic to your milk or something in it, you may need to change your diet or cut things out to keep baby healthy. Breastfeeding with allergies isn't impossible, though. In this section of Breastfeeding.com, we'll tell you how to keep baby safe if he or she already has allergies, and let you know whether there's anything you can do to help keep baby from developing any new allergies. Basically, we'll fill you in on everything there is to know about breastfeeding and allergies. There's also the question, of course, of whether baby actually has allergies. We'll clue you in on all the signs of a possible allergy, so you'll know what to look for. We'll also let you know what symptoms like excessive gassiness, mucousy poop or an especially fussy and spit-uppy baby could mean. If it turns out baby does have some sort of milk allergy or is lactose intolerant, we'll help you out with other sources of calcium to make sure you and baby are getting everything that you need. If you've been through the process of breastfeeding with allergies, feel free to jump into the conversation! Your feedback and answers to rookie mama questions is very appreciated. And for all moms: Even though this is a potentially scary or confusing time, try not to worry too much. There are lots of other people going through the same thing, and they're here--as well as Breastfeeding.com--to help you through the entire process.
