Food and Drink Restrictions

Watching what you eat and drink doesn't just end with your pregnancy -- there are still some restrictions you'll need to be aware of now that you're breastfeeding. After all, what you eat and drink while breastfeeding could pass through your breast milk and on to baby, so things like alcohol and spicy foods will need to be limited. Read on to find out what else is off-limits and what's a-okay.

Food & Drink Restrictions: What you need to know

Just because you're no longer pregnant doesn't mean you aren't still eating for two. In this section of Breastfeeding.com, we'll tell you about what to eat while breastfeeding, what to drink while breastfeeding, breastfeeding foods to avoid and dieting while breastfeeding. Why does it matter? What you eat and drink goes right through your system and into your milk, so essentially, baby is eating whatever you do. That means you need to be careful to eat food that keeps baby properly nourished and hydrated, and also isn't harmful to baby in any way. Some common foods that moms have questions about are chocolate, sushi, carbonated drinks, herbal teas, cow's milk, nuts and spicy foods. We'll let you know which of these foods are safe to ingest, and which ones you should stay away from while you're breastfeeding or pumping. You probably also have questions about alcohol--we'll give you the entire scoop on alcohol and breastfeeding, including whether "pumping and dumping" is really a viable option. This section will also fill you in on how to tell if baby is having a possible bad reaction to what you're eating. Symptoms like bloody stool could be your tipoff, and we'll let you know how to proceed. We'll also fill you in on breastfeeding dieting, and how to go about it safely--if at all. We'll also let you know what sorts of foods and drinks will keep baby best hydrated, and why it's so important. Good luck!
