Herbs & Supplements

We know how it is -- now that you're breastfeeding, you're probably second-guessing everything you put in your mouth. (Are we right?) It's definitely wise to look into whether or not certain herbs or supplements would negatively impact your breast milk supply, in addition to regular foods and drinks. But it's also a good idea to look into what herbs or supplements could positively (or negatively) affect your supply as well. From the benefits of fenugreek to the risks of herbal teas, it's all here.

Herbs & Supplements: Everything you need to know

Now that you're breastfeeding, it's time to go natural--right? Actually, that's not always the case. Some breastfeeding supplements, like fenugreek, can help, while herbal teas do have risks. In this section of Breastfeeding.com, we'll tell you all about safe herbs for breastfeeding, safe supplements for breastfeeding, and what exactly all these breastfeeding herbs will do. We'll cover echinacea, fenugreek, and herbal teas. We'll also let you know what vitamins occur naturally in breast milk, and what vitamins you might need to supplement baby with if you are exclusively breastfeeding. This section will tell you all about fenugreek, a natural supplement that has been known to increase milk supply. We'll tell you how it works, and whether you should be taking it even if you don't have supply issues. Knowing whether the supplements you're taking are safe for baby will keep you feeling more safe and secure, and will keep baby healthier as well. There are also likely to be breastfeeding herbs that aren't yet definitively known to be safe or unsafe, and our recommendation for anything in that category is to stay away, just to be on the cautious side. (Caution is always better when it comes to baby, right?) If you have experience with herbs and breastfeeding, feel free to leave a comment and let other Bumpies know all about your experience. New mamas will always appreciate the advice!
