I have been interested in birth since high school, where I was able to take early child development classes in my freshman and sophomore years. Much later, with the birth experience of my first child, that interest was reawakened. That was in 1989. In 1990 I began apprenticing under various midwives. From 1990 to 1993, I apprenticed with five different midwives learning from each of them.
In 1993, my family and I moved overseas to Ivanovo, Russia. While there I continued to learn about the birthing process and was exposed to an entirely different cultural approach to birthing. I was able to compare and contrast the attitudes and practices surrounding the birth process in two different cultures which helped shape my own philosophy.
I continued to study and train after moving back to Western Colorado, I began working with Hope Coulter a local midwife in 2004. After gaining more practical experience assisting Hope, I decided to become a birth doula. This allows me to act in a support role and advocate for both the parents and the baby which I’ve found so satisfying. Being a doula also allows me to work with parents who are having a homebirth or a hospital birth. My current training is with Doula’s of North America, International.
I have had five of my own children and one miscarriage. Three of those births were homebirths, one was a hospital birth in Russia and one a caesarean birth in Montrose, CO. This has allowed me to personally experience a wide variety of birth experiences from a mother’s point of view.
