Teething is a great challenge no matter your feeding system, ie bottles or breast or combo. Teething can interfere with all areas of life. Comfort measures are a must. Usually it is hard to figure out what is going on at first. The baby is crying and fidgety. Their sleep/wake cycles are off. Their temperment seems very altered. Their might be a lot of drool, saliva increases and sometimes a low grade fever. Early teeth, earlier than 6 months, can pose a particularly difficult problem because the baby lacks the dexterity to put something to her mouth for comfort when needed. At this stage, I have been very successful with numbing the gums with either one drop of clove essential oil or rum! Place the oil on to clean finger. Rub onto front lower gums, usually they will appear red and swollen. The baby will react to the oil. It is very numbing. The action is immediate. For older babies we can give frozen whole carrots; a frozen wet wash cloth, frozen peas ( a personal favorite), a new tooth brush. Some are into the teething biscuits but I find a rice cake just as affective. Numbing the area is the first line of defense. There are homeopathic remedies that are safe and easy to administer.
