For nurses who work clinical OB units, please don't be afraid to promote and encourage the mother's who are birthing at your facilities to feed their babies breastmilk and ONLY breastmilk. According to the lastest recommendations by the American Dietitic Association. 100 percent breastmilk for babies is best for mother and baby! Please see the link: Put it in your browser for careful review: http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20091107/hl_hsn/breastfeedingbenefitsmomsandbabiesreport. You may see how breastfeeding, total breastfeeding inpacts the baby's risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, as well as the mother's risk for Postpartum depression. Breastmilk is LIVE NUTRITION which changes to suit the mother and the baby's needs. Please recommend breastmilk, and breastmilk alone to all mothers, preferably while they are still pregant. Teaching that is attempted at the bedside is better than none, but doesn't yield the same results as planned, careful planning for the new mom and baby. Recently, I was involved in assisting two daughters initiate breastfeeding in hospital settings and had difficulty in both settings with some nurses...believe it or not...nursery nurses who didn't support breastfeeding more than push formula. Both daughters were persistant in their desire, and both pushed through the attitudes. Sadly, the outcome for them and their daughters could have been much different, had they not been so brave. Please share with me what you have found that encourages nursing staff to continue to promote breastfeeding. The clinical setting where I presently work is still beset with trained nurses who don't support the breastfeeding mother as much as they could. I would love your advise.
