I have 2 beautiful children; Jacob 6, and Jasmine (pictured) is now 3, and a caring husband who plays in a local band Jabarvy (www.jabarvy.com). My first pregnancy was a complete life changing experience. I was working on finishing my degree in Psychology when I found myself on a path to be a mom. This encouraged me to start my own business with macrame and natural oil soaps. I found my calling though when I started working for WIC as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. It is amazing how learning through life experience can sometimes be so much more substantial than a degree. I had challenges breastfeeding both of my children and learned so much from those experiences. As a Peer Counselor I was able to couple that experience with the training I received to be a good support person for thousands of new moms.
Lactation Experience
Through WIC, I was trained in the composition of breastmilk, anatomy, and mechanics of breastfeeding, and counseling techniques. and have continued my training through reading, courses, and conferences, and mentoring with a variety of Lactation Consultants in the hospital, Mom's Place, and private LCs. After 5 years of mentoring and training I have passed the Board Exam and am now an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
My intrest has always been with helping people through trying times and I have to say that I have found more enjoyment in fulfilling that goal through breastfeeding and birth counseling than I think I ever would have had I gained a PHD in psychology.
Birth Experience
I had my first child in the hospital and my second at home. I've experienced both spectrums with a doula and good family labor support for both. I feel it is important, at this time, to say that any woman can be a doula. There is an innate understanding of the change that is taking place during labor that any feminine grounding force will provide strength, and walk with you on the journey. My mom was a great Doula and was happily there for both of my births. However, having a trained doula that can also direct or help you onto an easier path can make a big difference. My desire to become a Certified Birth Doula came from my birth experiences.
Doula Experience
I have attended 5 beautiful births (2 home deliveries, and 3 hospital births) as well as my own two births. I have also completed the D.O.N.A. Doula training and am 3 births away from being a D.O.N.A Certified Doula
Affiliations
I am a volunteer for G.A.L.S. As well as promoted and supported breastfeeding through classes to high school students and childcare providers.
