After spending about twenty years in obstetrical and motherbaby nursing, I became board certified in lactation and now practice in both an inpatient and outpatient setting
I found it interesting that your nursing practice has been primarily in peds. Most LC's I know started in OB/Newborn nursery. Many peds nurses are content to let the lactation consultant deal with breastfeeding. I wish more peds nurses would appreciate and support our breastfeeding moms!
I really feel like all peds nurses should be skilled in at least basic breastfeeding support. Once the baby is discharged, then who will help mom. In our area, after discharge, mom cannot be assisted by the hospital. I kind of always looked at it as a perfect fit for me to go into lactation.
