I plan on breastfeeding as soon as my baby is born in late March. I am a new mommy and right now I am trying to fill in my baby registry. I realize this will depend on my baby girl when she arrives and what her preferences are, but I wonder if any of you have a particular opinion on which bottles/nipples are best to use when you switch from breast to bottle.

I will be a working mommy after my maternity leave, and will need to pump and have Baby Lillian's caregiver bottle-feed her. I have read Dr. Brown's bottles and the Platex Ventaire bottles are supposed to be close to nursing. I am not sure about any others. What do YOU recommend and why?

Thanks for your advise!

I use playtex (the ones with the bags... can't remember the name) and the shape seems to be similar to the breast. They sell attachments to go on those bottles so you can pump right into the bottle. that is the only problem. All other bottles the pump attaches right to them but the playtex are too wide. hope this was helpful and good luck!! congrats!! love the name

Ds took Avent bottles.

Dd is a reverse cycler and the only think she would remotely go near were the small standard bottles by gerber with the orthodontic nipple.

The only bottle DD2 takes is the Platex naturalatch with the Latex nipple (drop-in system). The First Years Breastflow seems like a lovely bottle (rejected by our babies), and is supposed to help prevent artificial nipple preference.

One concern that I had in choosing a bottle is the presence of Bisphenol A in the composition of many bottles. BPA mimics the sex hormone estradiol in the body. If my baby were going to taking a bottle regularly, I would seek a bottle that is BPA-free, and put a different nipple on the bottle if baby had different preferences. I know the Playtex drop-ins are BPA-free, as is Adiri Breastbottle nurser, as are these: http://www.greentogrow.com/product.aspx?productID=BB05WD. I'm sure there are more...

My son used the wide nipple playtex ventaire and did very well. In fact, he had to have pumped bottles several times from 3-5 days old because of difficulty latching and I was able to get him to latch onto the breast even after offering him the playtex ventaire bottles. They can be kind of hard to clean because of the little inserts in the bottom that allow air in but also keep milk in. Also, you can't pump directly into them because of the wide mouth. Overall, I recommend them and will probably use them when I have another baby.

We introduced the Avent #1 nipple to DS at about 3 weeks and he took it perfectly and never had a problem switching from breast to bottle to breast

We use Avent. He started with 1 and now uses 2. We tried 3 last week and it did not work, way too fast. I thought since he was almost 5 months old, he might need it, but it was not a good idea.

We use Born Free bottles with a stage one nipple. We love them. I work full-time. My little one is almost 6 months old and he takes a bottle 4 times while I'm gone during the day. Usually eating between 19 and 26 oz total. I nurse in the morning and when I get home at night and all day all the weekends. Sometimes he fusses at the breast but we just keep working with him and then he takes the breast just fine. We started giving him one bottle feeding every other day when he was about 8 weeks old. Pumping and working outside the home is the most challenging thing I've ever done. From what I've read, there is no "right" bottle/nipple as it depends so much on the little one. Good luck.

Like Madelsmamma the only bottle my DD would touch is Platex drop ins with th Latex Nipple. She would not touch silicone or any other bottle with a ten foot pole.

I like the Playtex bottles because I can freeze my expressed milk in the bags and then put it right into the bottle. I also like them because the nipples are shaped more like nipples than the other bottles.

I have read that if you plan to use bottles very early on that a regular width orthodonic nipple is best for young young babies.

but we too are a playtex family (arent suposed to give bottles in the beginning anyways)

We used the playtex ventair bottles at first, but our dd didnt like the whole bottle idea. I just recently bought the Medela (the fast flow) nipples that go with the pumping bottles and she loves them. I pump into the bottles, screw on a lid and then all DF has to do is put a nipple on it to feed dd. I love anything Medela.
