Natch, there's no prize for nursing the longest. I don't feel I was a better mother to babes #2 and #3, because they nursed longer than babe #1. Mine have all self-weaned, too, and all kiddos are different and have different needs.
End of PSA.

My youngest is 3 years 1 month and still nursing with no limitations.
I began to limit my first when she was around 18months to 2 years because I was pregnant and I regret it. She continued to hold on to those few nursing sessions until 4 when I pushed weaning and then only nursed a few times between 4-5 when she was sick.

My only child is still nursing at 30 months, and showing no sign of wanting to stop. If I sit still long enough, she's on my knee wanting her "M" as she calls it. Things might change when the last few teeth are through.

I nursed my oldest dd until she was 5-1/2 years old. I was between 2-3 mos. pregnant with dd #2 and #1 was down to nursing once every few weeks or more. She instantly noticed and hated the taste of my milk, to the point of running to the toilet and spitting it out. Then she marched back up to me, put her hands on her hips and said, "What IS that yucky stuff?" She took just a taste once more after sister got here, and the novelty had worn off. I don't think we could get any more gradual than that.
By the way, today she's a terrific young woman and at the top of her nursing class. She's gonna make a great RN.

Madelyn is 17 months. My oldest DS nursed the longest so far around 30months.
I have no idea how long I will nurse my youngest, but I already tripled the amount of time I nursed the first. Four weeks with Rylan and twelve weeks tomorrow with McKade.
I couldn't imagine nursing a 30 month old. My first is 32 months now. I couldn't imagine having the conversations that I do then having him latch on

That's true... but it's still interesting to see how long some babies are nursed. I'm always amazed when hearing stories of 5 year olds and older children being nursed. It's just not something that you see in the US very often.
Oh... and Logan will be 1 year old on Wedneday, May 21st (next week). So excited!

I'm certain I don't have the oldest but here are my stat's:
ds#1 - self weaned at 16 months (not a strike, of that I am certain)
ds#2 - mostly self but some encouragement from me weaned at 26-28 months
ds#3 - same as #2 but at 32 - 34 months
dd#4 - same as above at 34 months
ds#5 - currently 19 months and going strong :)
He's probably my last so I shouldn't find myself pregnant and decide to encourage weaning as I did with #3 and #4 so we'll see if I decide to encourage at some point anyway or totally self wean this one. Either way, it will be bittersweet, I'm sure.

I have a question...For those that do en, and your child only nurses once or twice a day, or only a couple times a week for that matter, how do you make sure you still have milk?

When I extended nursed my children (4 1/2 and 4 when they weaned), I wasn't really producing any milk at the end. They still like to nurse for comfort.

About how to make sure there's milk, my experience is that unless I'm pg, there's milk. And if I am pg, my nursling still nursed anyway. However, I tandem nursed for 25 months so DS1 weaned while DD continued. I'm sure DD will wean while DS2 continues. So it will be a long time before I experience one child weaning and no one else nursing.
At 4 DS1 nursed 3-4 times a day. At 4.5 it was once a day. He weaned a month shy of 5 and it was no longer every day by that point.
DD is 3 and is just back up to 2-4 times a night. (She dayweaned herself at 2 when she dropped her nap since she'll only nurse lying down). I had a c-section with complications so she went from 2-4 times a night to not at all to once a night. I can finally roll over so it's back to 2-4 times a night again.

Okay, checking in again. DD is now 6 years 6 months! She only nurses right before bed. As far as if I still have milk, I simply ask DD to show it to me! She opens her mouth and shows me. I think I might actually have to stop when there is absolutely no milk left! I barely have anything but just enougy for about a minute of nursing. I'm still waiting for this child lead weaning thing!
