I know-- I don't want to use formula, but we have to because my supply is so low. I tried everything to build it up-pumping 8 times a day, herbs, etc. It was just not to be with this baby, even though I nursed my last baby until nearly 3 without supplementing at all until she started solids. I think it may be due to medications I was taking those first few weeks after he was born causing a low initial supply.

So we are using formula-- he is probably getting more than half of his diet through formula, and at the beginning, he gulped it down no problem. He was starving at that point after months of me insisting on no formula. He had dropped from 50th percentile to 5th percentile. 3 weeks of supplementing and he gained over 3 lbs!

Now that he has starting gaining weight he is starting to show a preference for breast milk, coming off the bottle, letting it dribble out of his mouth, etc. when he is drinking from a formula bottle, but seemingly enjoying the breastmilk. He has to have at least a few bottle s Now I know that breastmilk tastes yummy, but I think formula tastes awful. Right now he is taking a lactose-free store brand because he has tummy trouble due to antibiotics. Otherwise we do the Costco store brand. Any suggestions on one that tastes better? He has not enjoyed solids either-- we have tried a few and he doesn't usually like them. We've been trying to do bananas and rice cereal for the diarhhea.

You may want to post this on the general breastfeeding board.

I have no idea about the formula. I would try it myself and see which I liked the best. That is what I do with DS baby food.

Also, are you pumping or nursing at LEAST every 3 hours to help build your supply

I wanted to post a reply to this even though this is an older topic, because it is important for new Moms out there searching the internet to get as much information as possible...so two things:

1. My supply started to drop and I was unable to get it back up there even though I was pumping 10 times a day. Well, it was the pump and the fact that my diet was not so great. I had been using a Medela Pump in Style for months and my supply was never that great. So I switched to using either the Avent Isis double electric pump or my Medela hand pump and started taking a natural iron supplement each day, Vitamin Code Raw Iron with vitamin C.
My supply has increased about 50% now. Im going to dump the Medela Pump in Style and just use it in the event of an emergency. I know, it's so popular..but that pump in my opinion is that it is mediocre.

2. Gerber Good Starts Gentle Plus Formula tastes enough like my breast milk that our daughter will drink it and has no clue its not the real thing. The one that is ready to drink is really good, the powder is very close to it in taste as well. Our child had not been gaining enough weight due to my supply dropping, and Similac Advance or Enfamil Lipil was being added to her bottle to try to supplement and this was just not working. All of that not only tastes awful, but it may have also hurt her tummy.

Slow weight gain is scary for us, so we were thrilled to find the Gerber brand tastes good.
We hope she will start drinking more milk, she already seems to be doing better after just one day on the new formula. She is 7mos old and 10 days.
