View Full Version : 4 days old and refusing from no where

Serenity is four days old, and has done EXCELLENT at BF thus far. To the point where I was kinda celebrating in the fact that I had such a wonderful gift of an easy to BF baby.
Until today.
Out of nowhere, during feeding she detached and began to cry. That was around 2 pm. Since then (it's four am) I have gotten in about 30 minutes total of her actually latching and eating. She will put the nipple in her mouth, and then turn her head, looking for something else.
Her uncle is 13, and has tried to be helpful, but keeps pushing the pacifier that I have for emergencies on her all the time. He has only been around her for today, so I don't think that's enough time for her to have developed a dependency is it?
If anyone out there can help, please let me know.

Welcome & congratulations on your little one!
Pacifiers are not inherently bad, but they can cause problems in the early days. I made the mistake of giving my baby a pacifier, and he exhibited the same behavior you are describing. I would recommend staying away from artificial nipples of any kind for the next 4 - 6 weeks as it can cause nipple confusion. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/start/concerns/pacifier.html So, get rid of the pacifier & don't introduce any bottles for now. The best thing to do is put the baby to breast every time she seems even remotely fussy. You might feel like she's feeding constantly, but that's normal early on. Her tummy is very small, so it doesn't take much to fill it up, and it doesn't take long for it to empty. If you put in the time now, it will get easier later on.
You can also try breast compressions while she's eating. http://www.kellymom.com/newman/15breast_compression.html This site has a lot of great information, so if you have time, look over some of the info.

Has your milk come in yet? If it has, she may be getting more milk than she is used to and it may just be a matter of her adjusting to her new food supply.

I have an appointment with a lactation specialist tomorrow. I have been using the medicine type syringe and sugar water to lure her to the breast, and putting some sugar water on my nipple. All day we have been using less and less sugar water.
Thank you all for your help.

You also might want to post this question or any future concerns on the debate boards, many more people will see it and could have some information to offer. Good luck.

I agree & could it be gas? Like try burping & re-latching :-)

http://www.breastfeeding.com/forums/images/smilies/welcome.gif Congrats on your daughter and the decision to bf! It is sometimes common for fussing in the first few weeks (http://www.kellymom.com/bf/normal/newborn-nursing.html), try and hang in there!
