I am having a really hard time getting used to the front slings for babies. When can I start using a backpack? My dd is 9 weeks. Can I start putting her on my back when she's 3 months?

I think they need to have good head control, first. Do you have a backpack or are you looking for one?

I have an Ergo carrier that I love. I can use it for front, hip, and back carrying. It is super comfortable on my back -- the most comfortable I have ever used. The instructions for it recommend not doing back carrying until 5 months, but it also says that back carrying can be done once baby has good neck support, so if that earlier... One of the best things is that baby won't grow out of it. I can still use it to carry my 4-year old on my back if I need to.

Sounds to me like you could use a GREAT carrier.
There are a TON of different types and there are even a few that you can put an infant on your back in, usually wraps.
If you are talking about a frame backpack you aren't supposed to put a baby in them until they can sit unsupported...at around 6 months old.
Google Babywearing and see what comes up..there are some great resources out there for good carriers, most of which are fairly unknown in the mainstream world
