My ds is 1 month old tomorrow, over a week ago he started to have a terrible diaper rash that was getting a little better over several days but then overnight he laid in a stool for an hour or so and has been raw and red with Burn like rashes around his anus. Went to MD, She said put mylanta on it and Aquaphor, (Ive tried everything else) improved over night, still bad, but better. Question is this...He is having so many soft liquid musturd to olive green stools, 10+ a day, mainly overnight that i set my alarm for every hr. (no kidding) just to change him, and yes he had a stool every change. (hopefully he wont get his days and nights mixed up) I know this is typical for breastfeed babies but could the burns be a reaction to my diet or just ultra sensitive skin as my md said? AND will supplementing one bottle of formula help firm up and lessen the stools, or should his system mature soon and quit stooling so often. I have alot of questions I know but I am so overwhelmed and tired I almost want to give up breastfeeding if it means no more frequent POOPS!
Thanks so much, I used to frequent this board 8 years ago with my daughter who breastfed for 18 months, glad it was still here to come back to..

Welcome back! I'm far from an expert on the subject, but wanted to pass on info I've gleaned from this site. I'm sure someone much more knowledgeable than I will be along. I don't know if you've tried it or not, but Triple Paste works great for DS's diaper rash. Is it possible that he has a yeast infection? I've read that some babies will get yeast infections in the diaper area that will be very difficult to clear up. I've also read that some babies get red rings around their anus due to sensitivity to something in your diet. Some of the typical culprits would be milk & dairy, nuts, citrus, and fish. There are others, but these are the first ones that come to mind.
Most BF babies poop at each feeding in the early days. Sometime later (later determined by each baby - 3 weeks to 5 months) the frequency will often decrease to once a day or even less often. DS is 6 months, & poops every 2-3 days. I hope things get better soon.

Thanks for the quick responce, I wasn't sure about yeast so I took him to the Dr and she said that it wasn't. As far as the sensitivity, I drink hot tea with cream every day and cereal with milk most days. I am going to cut that down and see if there is a change this week. I am also on iron for anemia, i wonder if that could be an issue? I am going into town later and will pick some triple paste up, i have heard alot of good things about it, just hard to find. I think Target has it.

I have found that a newborns skin is quite sensitive, so I tend not to use any creams or ointments, if I can avoid it. I also would suspect yeast immediately, as even boys do get yeasty rashes. I always have on hand: grapefruit seed extract, it is a great remedy for stubborn rashes, that usually yeast is the culprit, here is a good link: www.drjaygordon.com/development/bf/thrush.asp
It doesn't hurt to try it, all you need is a spray bottle and some distilled water and spritz at each diaper change. My DR misdiagnosed my DDs rash and we didn't discover that until we had already tried numerous RX creams, the GSE cleared it right up.
I followed up with my DR about it and she said she had no official opinion as it is a homeopathic remedy which conflicts with her practice of traditional medicines.

Wal-Mart carries it in the microscopic town I live in, so I would think Target would as well. It's rather expensive, but worth every dime in my opinion. We don't use it at every diaper change, just when DS is looking a little red. Another thought I had is what type of wipes are you using? We use the Pamper's sensitive. When my mom was here she bought some other kind, and they gave DS an immediate diaper rash. I switched to just warm water on a wash cloth for a week, until it cleared up, then went back to the sensitive wipes.
