I had my 6th baby 3 weeks ago. She was in NICU for 2 days and then came home with me.
She was born 4 weeks early=near term. Am having trouble with weight gain. She is sleepy.
Went to 2 specialists. one a breastfeeding nurse and one a pediatrician breastfeeding specialist.

I started Fenugreek yesterday. Does anyone take prescription meds to increase milk supply?

btw I successfully nursed the other 5. the 1st was in NICU for 5 weeks and ended up nursing for 22 months!

tia for any advice

Welcome! I haven't taken any, but I know there are a few ladies around who have taken prescription meds. Hopefully they will be along soon. Have you tried breast compressions (http://www.kellymom.com/newman/15breast_compression.html)? Sometimes this can help a sleepy baby stay more interested in eating. Here's a good link on Fenugreek (http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/fenugreek.html), just in case you want more information. Good luck!

The prescription is Motilium aka domperidone. I don't think you can get it prescribed in the US, but you can get it in Canada. You can order it from www.inhousepharmacy.com without a prescription. There are other prescription meds such as Reglan, but it has a lot of unpleasant side effects.

My daughter was born at 33 weeks and even after she started nursing full time I had to continue pumping to keep up my supply. Her suck was just not strong enough to keep my supply strong. She is now 11 weeks old and I am still pumping 1-2 times a day plus taking fenugreek to keep my supply up. Sorry that I do not have any info on prescription meds.

My son was born 9 weeks early. My milk supply was doing great at first, better than most with preemies. The last week he was in the hospital, however was very stressful. I also had to drive and hour one way to see him. It made for long days and little sleep. I was suprised that milk supply was doing so good. Then all of the sudden it wasn't. I asked my OB for reglan. I started taking it two days after Josiah was home. I started feeling very exhausted all of the time (I though it was just the 3 hour feedings) It just got worse. I would take a nap and wake up exhausted. I constantly felt the need for sleep but the inability to do so. I would also start to fall asleep while standing or walking even. It was terrible. I was very depressed from it and felt hopeless. I was also down about the fact that my son went from no formula to being supplemented twice a day. I finally realized it was the reglan that had me feeling so terrible. I quit taking it because it wasn't worth me not being able to enjoy my son. I didn't even have the energy to hold him. I would fall asleep, and that scared me for his sake. I felt almost instantly better. It is nice to be able to function again. I would suggest you try other methods first. I have heard that fenugreek is good, I just got some to start taking. Every person is different though and medication has a different affect on different people.
