I am only about a month along. We just found out a few days ago. I still nurse my almost 16 month old and I want to continue.

I am getting scared of drying up! I eat oatmeal every day now but it is still a fear in the back of my mind.

Is anyone else pregnant and still nursing a baby?

I breastfed my first daughter while pregnant with my second. I was only able to do it for a few months, though, because I was losing to much weight. I get terrible morning sickness, though, so that was part of the problem. My sister-in-law breastfed her first while pregnant with second for most of her pregnancy, and will do the same with her second now (she's 2 months pregnant). She did just fine, but she does not get morning sickness. So, how you handle it will depend on how your pregnancy goes. If you are not having any problems yet, the chances are you won't for the rest of the time. Just remember, you need to make sure you are consuming enough calories to make up for the breastfeeding and pregnancy...you don't want to make yourself sick while taking care of the babies...and they will take every vitamin and mineral your body needs first! :)

I am. This is my second time to do it. When I was pg with dd, ds only nursed for a few months. He was under a year and my supply decreased significantly.

Dd is currently nursing. She is almost 22 months. I am pretty sure my supply has dropped some because she is constantly switching sides. I am planning on letting her nurse as long as she wants, so we will see what happens.

Congratulations!

Yeah I think he is getting used to the drop in supply. he no longer gets upset when there is no let down, just nurses for comfort and seems to know that he'll get some later! :) He does get milk out several times a day still but nothing like he used to.

I do hope he makes it through because I know he isn't done and I can't wait to see how excited he is the first time he nurses and my new milk has come in!

I am eating a ton and taking my vitamins. I do get tired but that is normal. No sickness yet but I'm still so early on, anything could happen I guess! I didn't get sick last time though.

This is going to be an interesting journey for sure!

Congrats!!

I nursed all 3 through subsequent pregnancies.
My 1st 2 self weaned at approx 15 months old when I was 1/2 way through the pregnancies, due to decrease in production and, according to DD who as very verbal at that age,...it "tasted yucky!"
They were both drinking bottles of cows milk by this point.

My 3rd child, DS2, was/is allergic to cows milk so he never took a bottle. My milk did dry up but he was 3years old, and I wasn't producing that much anyway. I URGED him to wean b/c he wanted to nurse even though nothing was coming out (It really hurt). He quit (temporarily) around my 7th month. Now that the baby is here, he asks if he can nurse, but when he attempts to, he just laughs!! He just wants to see if I'll let him.

Congrats! My supply dropped to pretty much nothing at 3.5/4 weeks pg when nursing just DS. He still nursed though there wasn't enough to swallow until 24/26 weeks. Some babies stop at that time due to the change in taste. DS was excited since there was finally enough to swallow though! I told him that the baby would make me have more breastmilk once she was born. That definately helped him love his sister right away! It also helped with the early engorgement since I could have him help me out! I'm hoping DD keeps nursing but she was never much of a comfort nurser and my supply has already dipped - though she gets a couple swallows out.

I did get very sick when pg and lost weight. My dr did tell me if I lost more she would want me to wean. (I was already on zofran and phenergan). But I wouldn't have weaned since I had no supply then! Nursing didn't cause me to lose weight, being sick did. I went on to have a net gain of 73 lbs after barely breaking even at the end of first trimester.

we are still maneuvering this sometimes rocky road and right now things seem to be going well. DS is 13.5 months old and loves his boobies! There was definitely a drop in supply around 8 weeks or so and he has continued regardless. I am currently 17 weeks and he nurses several times a day/night and at this point shoes no signs of slowing down ( not a problem with me). I know that this time can be unnerving as your body undergoes all of these changes again after it seems like you JUST got a good rapor with your baby! For me, I have really had to go back to when I first started nursing and had to let go and trust that he is getting enough and that everyones needs will be met! Happy pregnancy to ya!!!!

So far so good. I am 8 weeks and Andrew is still nursing strong. My supply dropped so bad at first I thought I was out of milk completely! And then sometimes he'd nurse so much at night he'd have nothing left all day. But things seemed to have leveled out. He waits longer (usually!) between nursings and gets more milk that way. I am also eating oatmeal muffins almost every day and that helps me tons with production. Don't feel like making any more tonight so I'll be out for tomorrow but it'll be OK for one day. Maybe I'll makes some cookies instead! ;D

I am pretty sure he's going to make it through this pregnancy. But I have come to a place where I am OK with it if he doesn't. I know it won't be because I am out of milk because he is getting plenty. It would be because he didn't need his baboos anymore. But I seriously don't see that happening any time in the next 9 months... or next 2 years for that matter!

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. I'd love to hear more still!

Ah, this is the kind of thread that I was looking for. My son will be 1 year old on Wednesday (May 21st), and we just found out that I am pregnant again which explains why my nipples have been so sore, and my milk supply decreasing.

We did not plan to have our children this close together and I am sooooo scared.

I would love to hear the bright side of things! LOL :)

Well I am about 20 weeks and we are still going. Usually down to 3 times a day, when he wakes up (we cosleep, he has his own bed next to ours, so he just comes on over and gets me!), nap time unless he falls asleep in the car, and bedtime. There is the occasional I hurt myself I need a boob or I am tired or bored or hungry or thirsty and he'll still come to me. If I think he's hungry or thirsty I usually offer him something to drink or whatever and he'll usually go for it.

i do still hope he makes it through. I am reading, Adventures of tandem Nursing and it scares me a little but overall it sounds like such a blessing to be able to still baby and nurture your first born at the breast while nourishing the newborn. It seems to help most moms with sibling rivalry and the lessons of sharing. I get the feeling he won't stop though, how else would he fall asleep at night! ;)

But, I am pretty much dried up. Sometimes I will have a bit of milk on my nipple or he will on his chin after nursing but I am no longer able to squeeze out a small drop after he stops. And he eats a ton more solids. I am positive though if he lasts until colostrum comes in, he'll be thrilled to be getting something again!

I surely have no intentions of weaning.

I am not now, but I did and went on to tandem nurse for 2 more years. DS was a major comfort nurser, so I knew he would probably not give it up even when my supply dipped way down (he was 2 when I got pg again). Once the colostrum came in he got some runnier poop diapers, and boy was he thrilled when my full milk came in after DD was born! How awesome that you are willing to meet his needs this way. :)
