Dear ENers:
I had originally planned to wean my DD at 24 months and then begin taking my anti-depression meds again. However, DD is now 21 months and I don't think that I can really begin the weaning process yet. DD is strongly attached to nursing and though we now nurse primarily between 6PM and 6AM, I just can not see weaning her now. DH thinks that this will be simple (just go cold turkey!), and is looking forward to a less intense, less angry wife. Has anyone taken Prozac? I thought I saw some postings a while ago about medication and BFing but I no longer see them.

Any thoughts and or suggesstions?

I'm on anti-deppresents, My dd is 6 months old and exclusivly breastfeed. Our doctor told us that Zolofft is the safest for nursing mothers. I haven't had any problems with my milk supply, and my dh and kids are much happier with a happier Mama

I'm on Zoloft. According to Medications and Mothers Milk it is category L2 which means it has been studied without an increase in adverse effects in the infant. According to the book, little passes to infant. Zoloft is one of the safest antidepressant to take while breastfeeding. I can give you more info if you need it.

I have been taking Zoloft while bf since ds was 9 mon. w/ no apparent probs. for supply or for ds.
He is now 16 mon. You can treat your depression and continue bf!

I took Prozac during both pregnancies and up till last summer when it just was not working as well for me, and have since been taking Effexor. I have been nursing one or two kids since December 2002 (down to one again now), and have had no issues at all with the antidepressants and my kids.
