I need to buy a breast pump and was wondering what you all thought of these two:

Ameda Purely Yours

or

Medela Pump in Style Original

I know these two brands are recomended for working nursing mothers but I don't know which one to get. I am on a tight budget right now and price wise the Ameda is better but I have heard that the motor can go bad rather quickly. But I have heard reviews on both of these being used for several years. I know that they are only supose to last for one child but I plan to have at least one more if not two after this one and I don't know which one is worth the money. One review I read on them said that this indivigual had both and the Ameda Purely Yours works just as well as the Melda Pump in Style and she liked the Ameda more.

I tried the Ameda one when my lo was in the hosp. and I didn't like it. I still love my PISA

I have a Pump in Style Advance, and like it. I have not used the Ameda.

There are lots of moms on here who use the Ameda with few problems.

I got the Medela, been using it for almost six months, and I am very happy with it. My insurance company actually covered 100% of the cost if I bought it at a medical supply store. All I needed was a script from my doc. You might want to check with yours.

That's how I got mine. I called my ins. company and told them I was back at work and I need a breastpump. In less than a week they had one delivered to my office from a health supply company and it was paid 100% by my ins.

I love my PIS. When DD was in the hospital I used an Ameda and I have to say it worked just as well. I only used it a couple of days though so I don't know about the motor breaking, etc. My insurance would not cover the cost of a breastpump. They won't even cover the cost for lactation consultants.

I used the Ameda in the hospital. I wasn't able to nurse for several days after he was born, and the Ameda helped me establish a very good milk supply. Caleb was in the hospital for 18 days, so when I was discharged, I used the Ameda while I was visiting and the PIS at home. They both worked very well. Now that he is home, and I am transitioning from primarily pumping to nursing at least half the time, I still use the PIS. All that being said, I felt as far as maintaininy a milk supply, they are both excellent. If it is just to pump while at work, and not full time, I would go with the PIS. The LC told me that the PIS would not maintain a supply longterm, but the Ameda would. Another advantage of the PIS is you can buy all the accessories and some replacement parts at Target. Hope this helps!

I got my Ameda PY through WIC - the motor did just die (6 mo's of use) but there's a one year warranty, my replacement was sent overnight Fed Ex! It's hard to find replacement parts locally though.

I have the Ameda, and love it. It's been going strong for 3 yrs now.

I think both are good though, it's just a matter of personal preference.

I'm not really going to be able to answer your specific question, but I thought I would share anyway in hopes it might help someone.

When I first started pumping I used the Hosptial grade Medela (symphony?). At home I use the PIS. I just returned to work yesterday and I rented a hospital grade Ameda at the recommendation of a LC. I'm leaving the Ameda at work and using the PIS in the car and at home. I have not detected a difference in how much I get between these two pumps. And I think I like the feel of the PIS over the Hospital Ameda.

I've used both, and I have to say that I like the Medela better. It seems like I get more milk than I did with the Ameda. But different baby, maybe a different supply? I am able to get more milk at each session with this baby than I did when pumping for dd1.

I went with the Ameda because I loved the one I used in the hospital, and because the warranty is one year. Medela is only 3 months (90 days). The Ameda works pretty good for me, I pump 3-4 a days, and nurse the baby about 3-4 a day. Doing this, I stay about 8 oz ahead of Nathaniel's hunger!

Yup, every woman is different in their breast pump preference. FYI...if you do not qualify for WIC, they will NOT give you a breast pump. Nor are they available for sale.

I have an Ameda Purely Yours. I used it with our son, who is now 6 1/2 and currently using for our daughter, who is 5 months. In my opinion, I think this is the best pump. Again, it's personal preference.

The Ameda has a diaphragm that is used in the Hygienikit. Apparently the HygieniKit protects milk from bacteria and viruses. No other pump can do that! You won't have to worry about having milk back up into your pumping tubes or into the motor.

As far as how well it pumps. If you don't know already, you will probably have the most milk available in the morning time. I pump twice at work(9am and 2pm) and also go to the princess and feed her during my lunch hour, every day. At the 9am pumping, I get anywhere from 7-10 ounces, no kidding!! The 2pm pumping, I get anywhere from 4-6 ounces.

I'm not familiar with a Medela at all. I can't compare the two at all. Sorry. I have a private office and I can close the door and pump. I don't do any work except look at my kid's pictures and hop online to this site. Just thinking about the baby and relaxing from work for 15 minutes can really help your milk let down.

I'm not a LC or anything but I am a huge supporter of BFing. There are tons of web sites where you can buy extra Ameda parts. Most home medical supply stores have both Medela and Ameda parts.

Good luck in choosing the breast pump that is perfect for you:) Just wanted to give you my feedback from my awesome Ameda. You can let me know if you have any other questions on the Ameda, I'd be happy to help any way I can:)

PS. The pump runs like it's new even after 6 years.

I know that Avent has a double electric pump, that has the same diaphragm development as Ameda. I didn't get it though because it only has an outlet plug in, no battery pack or car adapter.
