I'm new to tandem nursing - my youngest just turned 5 weeks and I'm also nursing my 2yr old (will be 3 in June).
Right now, the only position I've been nursing them in is holding my 2yr old DD on my lap in cradle position, with my newborn son above her also in cradle position.

I'm assuming this is probably the only way to tandem nurse, but thought I'd ask moms that have been doing it longer if you've found any other ways.

What I'd really like to find is a way to be able to nurse both of them while also laying down (I'm assuming this is impossible, but thought I'd ask). Before baby came, DD would wake at 6am every morning and comes straight to my bed and will nurse for 20-30 minutes. What I've always loved is being able to get those extra minutes of shut eye before getting up for the day (she no longer naps, so once we're up, thats it until bedtime). Now that the baby is here, both seem to wake @5:45am and both wanting to be fed. So I've been having to get out of my comfy bed and sit on my nursing chair to feed them both... missing out on those precious extra minutes of shut eye.

Does anyone have any ideas for me on how to nurse both while laying down? Am I looking for the impossible?

TIA

Hello, I haven't tandem nursed for about 7 years but the pictures in that link look pretty much like what we did.

I think the easiest way to do it is to get you and the baby comfortable and let the toddler slip in where ever. When laying in bed I layed on my side and had a body pillow behind me for ds 1 to prop on. Or I'd use extra pillows behind me and kinda half sit up with ds2 in the cradle hold and ds1 would nurse from the other side either off to the side or sitting in my lap under the baby.

It gets easier as the little one gets older. I could lay on my back and hold baby in crook of my arm (larger stretchy boobs too LOL) on one side and let toddler latch himself on to the other side. Other position sitting up that worked well for us was to put baby in cradle hold on boppy pillow on couch, and let toddler come up sitting next to me and latch himself on, but still just sit next to me.

I didn't worry about positions. I positioned the baby however I felt comfortable and then DS had to adjust his body however he could to nurse. Often, DS would be standing up! DS was 2 years 10 months old when DD was born. By that age, he was very good at figuring out what position to nurse in.

For laying down, I wasn't able to nurse both at the same time very easily. I did try lying on my back leaning a little towards DS. Then I'd have DD on top of me, her belly to my belly. This did sort of work but it wasn't very comfortable for me. I found it easier to have them take turns as I rolled from one side to the other.

I make sure that my 4 month old is latched on first--in the cradle position and then my 30 month old latches on whichever way is easiest for him.
