View Full Version : Which pump is best for "all the time" pumping?

Just wanted to know what ones are the best to use ALL THE TIME? I am due in July and would like to get one so that when I am away or want to go out alone with friends I can still go. But I didn't have any luck breastfeeding my boys, so I am thinking maybe it will happen again, but then again I really didn't have any support the last time. And it was just awkward for me.
**and also when my second boy was in the nicu, the nurses commented that I had more milk to share with other babies as well as my baby! So I don't think I will have a problem providing for this one. LOL

I'm currently exclusively pumping for my 3 month old son. I'm having great results with the Medela PIS. However, most LCs will tell you that a hospital grade double pump is best if you have to EP.
Hopefully you'll have better luck getting actual BFing to work out this time! :)

I am hoping my insurance will be giving me one so I don't have to put money into this since this is my last baby! Just in case. If bf does work, that is great!

There's a double pump that you can get cheaper than the PIS BUT its not for exclusive pumping. www.baileymed.com
The local WIC office gave me one to use. it works ok.

I love my PIS.
Please keep in mind to keep your supply up when your babe is eating your boobs need to be involved. In other words, just because you go out with your friends doesn't mean your only responsibility is leaving a bottle behind. If you are gone during a time your child would eat you need to pump (while out).

This is what I have. I use it 4 x's a day 7 days a week. It's pricey but is still a ton cheaper than formula.

Of course I will bring it with me. Nice reminder, because knowing me I would forget.
Just hear alot of bad stuff about Medela and Ameda, so I just want better suction, and more milk.

I use a Lansinoh double pump. I used the Medela Symphony and it made me so sore. The Lansinoh has speed and suction knobs that you can control. I really like it, and find that I get more milk out with it then the Medela.

Thank you! I will check out that pump.

The Lanisoh pump is the Ameda pump with different packaging. I have been happy with my Medela Symphony, so I might recommend going the rental route and try the Medela one, and then maybe try the Ameda hospital grade one if you don't like the Medela.

I rented a Lactina from the hospital for the first month. It was an awesome pump, but they are very expensive, and really too big to carry around all the time. I've been using a Medela Pump in Style since then, and its done its job.

If they do give you one, you have some great insurance.

My aunt is "pumping only" for her son who is 5 months old now. She has had good success with the AVENT pump. ISIS, I think.

I just wanted to mention something about the Medela PIS Advanced. When my first was born, I was investigating pumps when I wanted to get rid of the rental. The PISA is meant to only be used up to 4 times a day. Now I used it up to 5, and around the clock when I was on business trips, but the Lactation Consultant warned me that I could burn out the motor using it more than the recommended 4 maximum on a regular basis. Could is not would, but I just wanted you to consider that the motor might not handle all the time pumping. Also, if your insurance will pay for it, the insurance companies I'm aware of paying for it use the clause for durable medical equipment, and the personal use pumps (PISA, ISIS, etc) might not qualify. The medical/hospital grade pumps can. Which reminds me that a) I need to renew my pump agreement, and b) try to file for the reimbursement for my pump rental. ;)

They just don't give away, you pay 20% of the cost of the pump. But that really bites about the advanced it says on medela that you can use it daily and all day. So I guess that is a lie.
Which one can I get that is affordable that I can use ALL DAY/ALL THE TIME?

Just an FYI, I EP'd for 3 months with PIS Advanced and now that my babe is taking my breast in the evenings and overnight, I still use it 3 times a day during the 4 days/wk that I work. So far so good...
I agree, though, that it probably is best to rent a hospital grade double pump for EPing. You can always use the PIS for nights out or time spent away form home since it is much more portable. Do you work outside the home or are you a SAHM?

sahm, but seem to have no luck in latching my kids on. And since the first child I had no support from the lc and hospital I pumped for three months and my second child was a preemie and didn't have any sucking reflexes and had a hard time.
I will call up some companies to see about renting a hospital grade, is the lactina portable enough to pump in a car?

i love the ameda purely yours. i got it in december 2005 right after my first son was born. i used it for over a year when at work, pumping 3 x a day/5 days a week. i just took it back out to use for my second one. its still going strong--just had to replace some valves and i was good to go. at the stores, its sold under the lansinoh brand.

That's still pretty good! I didn't think insurance companies did that.

I love my Medila PIS Advanced. I've been pumping and nursing for 11 months now. I work full-time and for months I pumped 6 times a day and nursed my son. I'm now pumping 3 times a day because he's drinking less breast milk while I'm at work and eating more solids. I love the advanced model (I have both advance and regular). I've had no problems with the pump. I've used it in the car, at the office, and using batteries while traveling. Just heard about the new Medela FreeStyle Hands-Free Electric Double Breastpump, which sounds fantastic. I'm going to stop pumping in 30 day (when he turns one) and just nurse until he weans. Good luck.

I use the Medela Pump in Style. I pump 5 times a day (and b/f twice) and I'm very happy with it. When I was having breastfeeding problems during the first month and had to pump exclusively I rented an Ameda Elite which worked really good - you just have to turn the suction up as high as you can and set the repetitions at the lowest speed.

Medela PIS, the best for me. The 4th pump after 3 manual pumps. Avent ISIS manual pump is good, but time consuming. Medela PIS or PISA can use with electric, batery, car charger or manual. Vey expensive in Malaysia. Many of my friends bought Spectra 3, Korean made. It's an alternative to PIS/PISA for those who are budget constraint. But only can use electric.

Hospital grade pumps have a much more expensive motor, and the suction gradation (how quickly the suction increases and decreases) is much smoother and more gradual. Because of this, they are more effective at maintaining a milk supply over the long-term. I've never heard anything bad about either Medela or Ameda, but while I had excellent luck with the Medela Symphony, a friend could only use the Lactina. Whitecastle makes a hospital-grade pump as well.
At worst, hospital-grade pumps cost 1/2 of what formula costs, and most WICs provide them in leiu of formula for EP moms.
The Lactina is lightweight and easy to transport, but I nearly pulled my arm off trying to transport a Medela Classic to and from work.
And can I just add...the commitment to EP impresses me beyond words. Brava, mama.
