I have a very gassy/uncomfortable 2 month old. He's breastfed (via bottle) and has GERD as well. He's on medicine for GERD. I have not been eating dairy or soy for the past week. There has been no change in his gassiness and sometimes its even worse (depending on what I eat - not sure what makes him really gassy though). We're considering transitioning him to Nutramigin (hypoallergenic formula) in the hopes of improving his gassiness and making him more comfortable.

How long do you need to breastfeed to get the benefits both to you and your baby? Are there side effects to formula that I need to be concerned about? Is there a way to transition or keep giving him some breastmilk (or will that even work to improve the gassiness)?

Please help as I'm feeling so guilty about possibly stopping breastfeeding (even though it is for my son's happiness/comfort).

Thanks

You do not have to stop BFing. Get some baby gas medicine.

My baby was super, super gassy at 2 months old also. He did not have GERD though (although I sort of wonder if maybe he did). I cut out all diary products, all tomato products (those were worse than diary for him...actually they still are), pretty much all green leafy veggies, anything spicy or strongly flavored (including most garlic). This did help somewhat but he was still pretty gassy. We would put warm hands on his belly to help him relax (I later found this thing you can heat up and place on the belly), we also pumped his legs up and down and in circles to help him pass gas, we tried to hold him upright after feedings. My doc suggested chamomile tea to help as well, mylicon drops never worked for us. I never quit BFing, formula is far harder to digest and I felt it would just make the situation worse. He has grown out of it somewhat but he's still gassy and spits up a TON when on his belly. Hang in there and really research the benefits of switching before you make a decision. Good Luck. n OH, and I'm still only BFing now and he's 4 1/2 months. I plan to wait for solids as long as I can to help prevent this same thing with food.
