A college friend of mine is getting married and her shower is on Sunday. I'm going to get her a gift from her registry (probably the smoothie maker that's on there)
I also like to give gifts that people didn't register for. For those of you that have had a bridal shower.... did any gifts stand out to you? Anyone have any good ideas??
I don't have much to spend, but because she's a friend of mine, I didn't *just* want to get her a regular gift.
Of course I haven't had a bridal shower myself yet so I don't have any ideas! :p
Oh and she's freaking hilarious so I am open to funny/gag gifts as well. :D

That's a great site cc1003.
I've always thought www.uncommongoods.com has a lot of neat little gifts.
BTW - Thanks for reminding me! I'm supposed to get something for a Bridal Shower this Saturday. hehe

I see how it is - you ask for my suggestion and then run right to bf.com to find out what everyone else suggests. :p
I came up with two things:
How about getting or paiting a decorative slate or plaque and putting her new last name: The Smiths(with whatever her married name will be). You could either put under it Est. 2008, or their wedding date. That way, it's personal and handpainted.
Or, since she's a teacher, you could get something for her desk with her new last name?

You take too much time. I mean it's been like a whole hour :p
I don't feel like painting. After our yard sale last weekend I'm still tired

I like Billysmom's idea.
For my sil's wedding gift (Yes I know you asked for bridal shower) we got them a registry gift, and a very nice engraved door knocker. It had their last name and est. 2003, which was their wedding year. They bought a house before they got married, but didn't move in until after the wedding. They have since moved, and have taken their knocker with them. She told me it was the most special gift they received.

I did the door knocker for a wedding gift (too). I purchased it at Things Remembered.

One of my favorite gifts that I did not register for but recieved was a 'wedding cake' made with towels that matched my bathroom and cheapie little wedding decorations. My moms bestfriend made it and it was really nice and rather inexpensive. She used long pins to hold it together, a piece of cardboard on the bottom, and adorned it with strings of beads and flowers. She actually chose the color from my bridesmaid dresses which just so happened to be one of the colors in my bathroom.

Other things I got at my shower that were really unique or I have used to death...
My brother bought us our first gas grill, used that baby till she died. My mother and sister bought us a wood swing for the backyard (an adult one, about $200 at Sam's club).
I also got a set (like from a craft store) of towels for each holiday. They hang on my stove and I actually do set them out at each holiday.
My cousin did the poem thing with a basket of necessities. Kinda like this...

It was pretty cute. She read the poem and held up each item. The best part is all of the stuff was useful:)
Another thing my moms bestfriend made for me (I think it was for my baby shower but could go both was possibly) was an unbrella with tons of tissue paper wadded up and glued onto it to look like a pretty wedding/shower umbrella. The idea is to then attach any envalopes to it.

Recipes. I had 2 homemade cookbooks given to me by ladies from our church and they're my 2 favorites still, 13.5 years later.

That is a great idea! Another one would be to obtain favorite recipes from all the guests at the shower and then compile those.

I haven't been to a bridal shower in ages but one of the last ones I went to I gave a laundry basket fillled with stuff.
Envelopes, saran wrap, aluminum foil, ziploc bags in various sizes, paper towels, paper plates all the stuff you need when you first move in together, of course if they already live together they have most of that stuff.

I like to do gifts that reflect the personality of the recipient. I have ordered the more fun looking items off of registries, but sometimes I avoid the registries when I can't find anything that would be something they would expect from me. For part of a friend's wedding gift, I bought him the Animusic CD and DVD since they're into music and computers. For my wedding and shower gifts, I had lots of stuff on my registry from REI for camping and hiking - and no china. So, my suggestion is to get something that your friend and her spouse can enjoy together, like something for a shared hobby.
