We knew when we bought our house that it would need work done. We have gotten on our feet more and now we can do some work on the house. We had to hold back or our house would of been a construction zone.

We did some work inside the first year and now we are tackling the outside. Here is the before shots of our front porch. The ramp/mini deck is going soon and being replaced with stairs. Also, what color do you think I should paint the pillars and porch?

Okay, and what color shutters should we add to a white house?

Oh, I love your porch, sweet. Colour is so subjective, what do you like? What makes you happy? What area of the country are you in? IMO you can get away with a lot of colour in some areas and have to be more sedate in others, kwim? Of course if you're out in the middle of nowhere or don't really care what your neighbor's think, then you can do what you want, kwim?

We love colour, live in the city, in a historic district, sadly the city doesn't manage it all that well. People get away with all sorts of crap. Our exterior colours are med. blue, yellow (a bit on the mustard side), green and red for accents. It isn't subtle and I wish we'd chosen a darker or softer shade of green, but over all it works together.

We only have a neighbor on one side of us, but we aren't in the middle of nowhere either. We plan on selling in 5yrs (God willing) and I want the house to have curb appeal. I am thinking about dark green on the porch, but I don't know how that would look on the pillars. Our shutters would have to be the same color too.

BTW, where do you live Logic? Your spelling of "colour" has me interested.

I think dark green or blue would pretty.

I would go with a dark green or dark blue shutter.

What about powerwashing the porch and sealing the natural wood? If that is not an option I always think of porches with white. I would do a fresh coat of white paint.

I grew up in Canada, but now live in MO :( I am so homesick.

Love the dk. green for the shutters, very classic. I would leave the pillars white, but paint the caps (the square part at the top) dk. green and maybe the porch railing too. I would also choose an accent colour and use that somewhere.

You could use yellow as an accent and paint the little rings around the top of the pillar yellow. I'd go fairly bright or mustard so it stands out enough, no wishy washy pale yellow. :)

Oh, and we just moved a wisteria vine from the middle of one half of our yard to alongside our fence. Actually, dh split the original and placed it in two places alongside the fence. We know how invasive it can be, dh is planning to run strong steel cable through the top half of the fence posts. He also wants to grow bamboo, but in an old steel watering trough, so that should keep it contained.

That is a really good idea. The railing will be gone soon and we are going to put in stairs that can be climbed from the sides or the front. I want them about a foot wide. We'll replace the porch floor next year probably.

Okay, I don't know if this would be considered the railing, but see the board that runs along the bottom of the porch and by the pillar? Should I keep that white on top and do the outside ridge part green too?

Logic, I lived in Beamsville, ONT for 3 yrs. I did my last three years of HS up there. I love Canada!

Did the original spot of your wisteria regrow? I have heard that it is very hard to kill.

Can you post a photo of the whole house? It looks very cute from what we can see.

Looks Great!

Wisteria has not found us yet. I think it is going to soon bc it is ALL around us. Some folks have beautifully tamed Wisteria trees I am in awe of.

That is exactly what we thought. We couldn't pass it up when we saw the wood work in the house. It also is a 4 can be 5 bedroom house (5th being the finished attic). We wanted a big house. Unfortunately, our happiness came at the expense of someones financial misfortune.

Mama, I thought a deep red would be nice with dark green.

I love your house!!!!! Yes if it's possible if you can paint all the trim a different color and I still think Dark Blue or Green Shutters would be nice. You can also get Wine Red Shutters.

I agree with MM about so much green around your house that you should go with another color on it. I would also leave the pillars white.

That photo series is precious.

Red wine shutters might be nice. I am a little addicted to red though. :)

I decided on keeping the pillars white and doing accent colors. Now I just need to figure out what colors and find shutters that DH can put up.

Thank you BHF and CM. I love our house too. It is hard to see what we first saw in it because things can get overwhelming, but I do love it.

I would do the board that runs across the top of the railing, but not the one along the bottom. It is a great house. :) MonkeyButt is super cute!
