Hello all. My breasts all of a sudden feel really soft. It's as if they are empty. My DS is still pooping, peeing, and gaining weight. However, when he nurses, I don't hear him swallowing all of the time. I'm really concerned. My DS is three months old. I'm not sure if this is normal or not. I'm so upset.

Absolutely normal.

Your supply has adjusted to meet demand.

Don't be surprised when he goes through a growth spurt and wants to nurse more. Again, supply will adjust to meet demand.

You'd be surprised at how much milk you can get out of a breast that 'feels empty'.

It is very common for you to feel a change in your breast at some point.

I would just keep an eye on how many wet diapers he is having and his wt gain.

Also have you started your cycles back? You will notice a dip in your supply when that happens but will return to normal when your cycle is over.

My baby is 2 weeks old. 12 years ago I had a breast reduction and was not sure whether or not I'd be able to nurse. I had anxiety in the beginning not knowing whether or not I was producing anything. I breastfed exclusively for two weeks (with the baby under close obs. by the pediatrician). Sadly, at two weeks, when the baby was supposed to have returned to her birthweight, she lost 4 ounces. The doctor recommended I supplement with formula. I'm having such a difficult time.... she spits the formula up and I can't tell when and when not to offer it. She always seems hungry. I offer both breasts at each feeding after letting her take her time on the first (usually 20 minutes or so). I do see her swallowing- however, she becomes frustrated and aggitated at times... latching on and letting go... sometimes even crying while she's suckling. After the feedings, I do see milk running down. However, I don't feel any "letdown" ... sometimes I feel engorged but not always and I don't leak much. I just started pumping at the end of each feeding to empty the breast and about 1/4 ounce or so is left. I'm wondering how she could not be gaining weight if there is still milk left after the feeds?! I feel strange offering formula to her after feeds when more milk is left in the breast.... but I can't seem to pump enough to supplement by offering breastmilk in a bottle... If I pump the breast not used during the feeding (or used second), I seem to get about 3/4 of an ounce. This doesn't seem like much. She has not had a bowel movement in two days now (maybe a result of formula?) Please help.... I am feeling sad and frustrated and am trying really hard to be able to breastfeed and produce more milk.

Thank you!!!
Melissa

I'd suggest that you see a lactation consultant, Melissa.
