View Full Version : This is odd - anything?

Ok, my little one is just about 6 months old and within the last few days, she has been demonstrating some odd behavior.

When she is sitting in her chair or standing in her stationary toy, every once in a while she will move her head to her right side (to her shoulder) like 2 times in a row and then stop. She just did it again before, but went to the left, too... and that time it looked like she was frustrated and wanted to get out as she did it multiple times in a row.

I have also noticed that she has been congested on and off (allergies, I think). The last several nights, she has been sleeping terribly. She will go 2-4 hours at a time, wake up screaming (or scream in her sleep once in a while) and when we try to walk her around (which always works) we try to put her back down, she will start screaming and crying again. The only way I got her back to sleep last night was by nursing her. She is a pretty high needs baby, but this is out of character for her.

She is teething (she is getting her 2 top fang teeth in although they haven't broken the skin yet).

I called the doctor and she wants to check her ears tomorrow to rule out an ear infection, but she also said that it may be fluid in her inner ears (from the congestion or allergies and may not necessarily be an infection). That it hurts and it could be why she is tilting her head at times. When I mentioned teething, she said usually with the molars and teeth far back, they may tilt their head in the direction of the pain, but that her teething pain could be causing this, too. She said children's benadryl may help ease the congestion and fluid in her ears.

It's not an infant seizure (I have seen those before) and is exhibiting no problems with eyes, vision, babbling and speaking, and is right on track for all her milestones, if not early on some. I know that babies can develop little "quirks" and certainly throw their heads around especially out of excitement or frustration, but I was just wondering if anyone else has seen or heard of this before. I cannot tell if it's volutary or involuntary, but for the most part it looks like she just throws her head to her shoulder on purpose a couple times.

She nurses from both sides fairly well, so I don't think it's a sore neck muscle or anything, but I suppose it's possible.

Any thoughts, ideas, experience?

P.S. and she doesn't do this when laying down or sitting in her swing or bouncy chair.

I would try not to worry until you see the pedi. I know everytime Ashton cuts a tooth he has cold like symptoms and he also sleeps HORRIBLY

Thanks ladies...

I think my ds just confirmed that her ear is bothering her... she just tilted her head to the right again, but this time left her ear on her shoulder, almost rubbing it on her shoulder. She has also been rubbing her eyes, nose, and cheeks on and off all day.

Starting to believe this is ear and face pain from teething or fluid in ears. I just read somewhere that when babies have earaches, when you lay them down it's much more uncomfortable. That would also explain her screaming at night as soon as you tilt her back to lay her down. Even today for naps, she is moaning when I put her in her carrier and falls right back asleep.

I feel so bad for her.

I wish these darn teeth would break through the skin already, too. It's ridiculous.

I wouldn't give benadryl for congestion. Tylenol would be better for ear pain. Teething tablets would be better for teething pain. I've always nursed to get my son back to sleep at night, so that part sounds normal to me. I hope your baby feels better soon.

Yeah, I'm not seeing how Benadryl will help with congestion, since it's not a decongestant, it's an antihistimine. ;)
