i pump 3 times per day at work. the usual schedule is 8am, 1030am and then in the afternoon at 4 pm. i nurse my baby directly mid day, luckily. i usually get around 15-16 oz total, both boobs combined. i was wondering if this output is pretty normal or what. i am not worried about meeting her needs while i am gone bc i have some in the freezer too and she never takes this much in my absence anyways. just curious what you all get with pumping.

You get 15-16 oz over 3 pumping sessions? THat's about the same as my output. I get about 5 oz per session, pumping every 3 or 4 hours.

I am pumping all day while I work with my son's latch issues. I usually pump at 8:00 am, 12:30 pm, 4:45 pm, 6:00pm, 9:00pm, 2:30am, 5:30 am. I pump around 40 oz a day. This amount varies from day to day though. I do produce more than he eats though.

I BF nights and weekends. I pump once in the morning before I go to work, producing anywhere from 2 - 5oz depending on how hungry my DD is at her morning feeding. Then I pump 3x at work; 10am, 1pm & 4pm producing about 11-14oz. I currently make just enough for her during the day while I am at work. I use the weekends to catch up and stock up on my frozen supply.

That's actually quite a bit. The average baby takes in about 25 oz/day, which averages out to about an ounce an hour. And you're able to pump an average of about double that, it would appear.

When I pump, I'm able to get about 2 oz. This is actually a huge improvement that I"ve just seen in the last couple days. Before that, I was able to get MAYBE 1 oz when I'd pump.

I am struggling right now with output (prob due to pregnancy). Before now I would pump between 8 and 11 ounces first thing in the morning and then 5 ounces every 2.5-3 hours at work (3 times per day). Now I am lucky to get 3 ounces at a time. This morning I did get 7, but then the rest of the day just 3 so that is nowhere close to what DD needs for daycare. I agree with Kerry, your output is above average from those that I have talked to and the information I have read.

When I WOHM with my first child and would pump 3x/day while at work, I was able to get 6-8 oz/session. I never appreciated what a HUGE amount that was until this time around. I now realize that I was WAY overproducing with my son, and he was way overfeeding, which explained his very chubby roly-polyness as an infant (he slimmed down as a toddler and is now very slim 10-year-old). I shudder to think back, knowing that his daycare provider was GIVING him all 24 oz. of EBM during that 10-hour period when he was in daycare.

I pump every 3 hours at work usually 8:30, 11:30 & 2:30. Up until a couple of weeks ago I had been getting 20+ oz/day. The I had a plugged duct/mastitis and my output has sucked ever since. Now I am struggling to get the 15oz/day that I need for ds's bottles each day. Luckily I have about 400oz in the freezer, so I'm hoping to be done pumping by the end of the month. I can go home nurse ds at lunch.

My sister watched DS on Saturday for about 5 1/2 hours. I had 10 oz of ebm in dipper bag (2-4oz bottles and a 2oz bottle) as well as two packets of formula that will make 4 oz each. When DH and I went to pick up DS we found out that she had used up all the ebm and 1 packet of formula and had made up the other packet of formula and given DS 1 oz out of that. He only should have eaten twice in that time span and only takes 4 oz at a sitting usually. I can see giving him all ten oz of ebm but 15 oz???

I know how frustrating that is!! I was ticked when daycare decided to "up" Callie's intake and then not even tell me (I had frozen there for emergencies) I will never "catch up" now. I hate having anyone watch Callie because it doesn't matter who it is they think she needs to eat way more than she does and they go on and on about how hungry she is!

Wow! Yes, I've learned an awful lot about milk production and normal breastmilk intake this time around that I never knew before.

I think that when a baby is bottlefed, they're usually overfed. It's so easy to do, especially when a baby derives comfort from the sucking action and is used to comfort nursing at the breast, and they just take in more than they need. I've really stressed to DH (who will be watching our baby at night when I go back to work in a couple weeks) that he doesn't need more than about 1oz/hour.

For every momma who needs to leave babe with bottles of EBM, read this linky: bottlefeeding the BF baby (http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/bottle-feeding.html)

Before DS decided to reverse cycle I would pump 15 - 25 oz. per day over two pumping sessions. Now that he reverse cycles, I pump 8 - 16 oz. per day at one pumping session.

The daily amount: I am doing tons of pumping right now while we work on the latch as well. I usually pump about 30 oz (give or take)this is creating a huge freezer stash. I don't pump on any type of schedule, just whenever ds eats. So, my pumping amounts and times vary. But, I find that by pumping on his eating schedule, I usually put out about the same amount he eats. Except first thing in the morning, then I way, way overproduce. If I'm not with him, I always have whoever is watching him text me quick that he ate, so I know when to pump.

That's a great amount of bm.... my tip is to build up your freezer stash as much as possible. Once you get your period back, you will see a dip in your supply. Also once the baby starts eating solids... you will see a dip. I'm going through that now.... thankfully I still have a great stash. DS is having two bottles at daycare of 6 oz each. I am pumping 7-9 oz in two sessions. I keep trying to get that 3rd pumping session but work is pretty hectic.

Keep up the good work!

When I was EPing due to latch issues I could pump anywhere from 36-44oz per day when I pumped every 3-4 hours. I'm now physically BFing DS in the evenings and during the night. On the days I work, I pump at 5am, 9:30am and 1:30pm. I pump about 7-8oz each session for a total of 21-24oz.

I make tons of milk and I have been able to build quite the freezer stash, over 150oz!!! :D

Yeah, I thought that too - I had 500 ounces in my freezer! Now I am pumping nonstop and getting barely anything! :( If I can hang on for 2 months then I have enough in the freezer to make it to her first birthday!

This is only slightly off topic, but my sister and I were discussing bfing and how much ebm babies eat vs. formula - I swear I read that babies eat LESS bm and MORE formula, but she says no, it is the other way around?? Also, she insists you can't overfeed a baby - I insist that YES you can - I explained that when you are bottlefeeding the baby is going to keep swallowing because the milk drips from the bottle - whereas from the breast they have to suck to get any out and quit when they are full. (or maybe they keep sucking for comfort, but you know what I mean, right?) She insists that her baby needed 8 ounces at Callie's age (Callie is 8 months).

C and C's mom........you're correct. :) One cannot overfeed a BF baby, if they're solely BFing. But, when you add a bottle to the mix? Yes, it's absolutely possible to overfeed.

See also the linky I posted above, in my earlier post, about how to bottlefeed the BF baby. :)

Is your sister nursing or using formula?

Thanks Red, I was pretty sure I had read that here! The previous link says it is for babies 12 weeks to 6 months I believe. What about older than that? My sister is breastfeeding and has an oversupply right now - I told her you just wait until he gets in daycare - you will see what I mean - people (ok, maybe not ALL people, but that has been my experience and we have our kids in the same daycare) will always say your baby is hungry !

well, i'm envious of everyone's amounts. i pump 4 times a day- 2:30am, 7:15am, 10:00am, and 12:00pm. this is almost exactly how much i get each time
2:30am- 1 ounce (combined from both breasts)
7:15am- 4 ounces (combined)
10:00am- less than an ounce (combined)
12noon - less than an ounce (combined)

i just had 7 days off and i pumped 2x a day - i got about 2 ounces each time. my dh (sahd) said that it is already gone. i've printed out the pages that we suggested above and he said that he feeds her what he feeds her. since he is in charge when i am at work, i've had to accept his reasoning - although i don't agree with it.

i also nurse her the minute i get home and then on demand from then on

About two months ago, I was pumping 1-2 times a day at work and in the morning. I was getting anywhere from 10-15oz per session. I feel like a cow when I pump but I built a huge freezer stash so it was ok.

I am now only pumping once a day at work and on mornings dd doesnt nurse on both sides and still get about 10 oz each time.
