View Full Version : Sensitive nipples.....apparently.

I took ds to the doctor today for his two month well baby exam. My doctor asks me breast or bottle feeding, so I explain that ds gets breastmilk in a bottle and some straight from me. The doc asks more questions about why, so I explain our latching difficulties. The doc tells me that it is my fault.....that my nipples are overly sensitive and I need to get over this sensitivity if I want to breastfeed. So, I should breastfeed more often, increasing the amount of time at the breast each week so I get tougher. He also said that CST will not work and he doesn't believe in it. He also mentioned that my LC was wrong to refer me to a physical therapist without checking with him first.
Seriously?! So, he thinks that it's normal to have bruises and trauma on the nipples and that as long as the baby gets milk, it's ok. It's reshaping my opinion of the guy, that's for sure. Please tell me that all of you breastfeeding mothers did not have to just "deal" with the bruises, etc, and that a good latch gets rid of all this, that bruises, and bleeding and cracking and pinching is not normal.

You're absolutely right, and your doctor sounds like an idiot (an insensitive one, at that).

ITA, what an insensitive dickhead. Gee, someone else suggested something he didn't think of first? Too bad, so sad.
And you're right, all of that ISN'T normal. Hang in there, momma.

You need to change doctors fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I would keep the PT appointment. He needs to go to a breastfeeding class to learn what is normal and what is not. BF 101: it should not pinch, no nipple trauma, etc. I am sorry your pedi is such a pig!

I would change doctors if possible. If this is his expert advice for you then I would hate to hear his advice for your ds if any issues come up.
Keep up YOUR good work!!!

Nothing like being kicked while you're down, heh? I'm sorry your pedi is an ignorant dipshit when it comes to BFing. Try to take it with a grain of salt. Perhaps finding a new pedi who is a little more familiar with and supportive of BFing wouldn't be such a horrible idea. And FWIW, I would most certainly be keeping that appt with the PT. ;)

I will definitely be keeping the appointment with the PT. I was just so mad at the office today I could hardly keep from jumping down his throat. Ds1 has a different pedi, so I may switch ds2 over to the other guy as well.

Oh goodness, do have them with the same person! We use a family doctor, though, so we have the same guy (or 2 guys, as we do see one of his partners as well), for everything. Flark, Red can't keep her shit straight most of the time, I need simple as much as possible. :)

Yes, wow.
No, I've never experienced bruises, for Pete's sake! And bleeding is not "normal". It's not necessarily a huge emergency, but it's not freakin' normal. Neither is pinching or any other kind of nipple trauma.
