Hello,
Since my son’s birth we had no problem breastfeeding, I have plenty of milk, so much that my little one was always choking and spitting up. At 6 weeks his stools turned green. After some research and advice from my midwife, I found out that my milk flow was too quick and that the green stools were due to an imbalance of foremilk / hindmilk, my baby getting full before the hindmilk came. This is what I have been doing since then: I stopped completely to pump and I started feeding him on one breast only for 6 hours. My son is now 9 weeks old, his stools are still green, he is still very gassy, and my breast still getting quite engorged. If he’s not chocking any more, it’s because he’s biting me and when he does that I remove him from the breast and let the overflow run on a blanket. He only nurses for 7-10 minutes only every 2 ½ hours when before he was nursing almost every 3 ½ to 4 hours. I read that it takes 20 min for the hindmilk to be produced. Is this true ? How can I get him to get this milk ?
Please help :) ! What should I do ? And by the way is it because he is not getting the hindmilk that I am not losing weight ? Also is there anyway to ease a painful let down ? Thank you.

P.S.: his weight gain is ok 3.865 kg at birth. 5.135 kg at 8 weeks

We now know that there is not a true transition from foremilk to hindmilk. The milk just keeps getting creamier as the feeding goes on--every 15 seconds it's higher in fat.

I don't think the hindmilk issue has anything to do with loosing weight. Your painful letdown may be somewhat related to your oversupply.

Thanks Debbie for your answer,
Should I worry about him having green stools ? Is he nursing long enough ? I read in a book that he should be nursing between 20 to 40 minutes !
Thanks again

At his age he may only need 5-7 minutes to feed. Continue with the block nursing, increasing the number of hours until his stools are yellow.
