I am a first time mom and have no idea what is normal, but we had to supplement with formula at the beginning since he was dehydrated and urinating crystals. He was jaundiced when he was born and the doctor scared us into formula or else he would have to go back to the hospital. It worked and the jaundice went away. He is now ten days old and does not seem to get satisfied with my breast milk alone. I have increased my supply by taking fenugreek and blessed thistle, but it still does not satisfy after feeding 20 minutes on each breast. He will eat an additional 2 ounces after feeding from me for 40 minutes. Don't know what to do. I really want to stop supplementing with formula...

first of all congratulations on breastfeeding. You are doing great by wanting to continue and to breastfeed exclusively. The best thing i can think of is to get a supplemental nursing system you can log into the internet and get one for 40 to 50 dollars. The supplemental system will provide him with additional expressed breastmilk and the baby will continue to stimulate your breasts; this is the most important thing to do in order to increase your milk supply but be patient because it takes about a week for you to build your milk supply to the level you may want it at this point.
The supplemental comes with two small tubes that are taped to your nipples and the bottle in the center you can fill with your pumped breast milk that way the baby gets all breast milk.
you may want to rent a hospital grade pump around 20 dollars a week for a month so that you can doble pump after each feeding. Pump for about 5-10 minutes both breasts and save that milk for the supplemental bottle.
I hope this helps.
