I did not expect this so soon! Last night when I was cleaning DS before putting his diaper on and putting him to bed, it happened. I did not even realize what was going on at first, I was just cleaning him as usual and he started screaming his head off and tears were rolling down his face and he started flapping his hands and kicking. I thought something had bitten him and was looking around for something crawling. Then I saw that there was a tiny bit of blood on the wet wipe when I put it down. OMG!!!! It was and still is sooooo red and irritated looking where it came loose and there is a little bit of smegma. I remember the doctor telling me that when he was circumcised he would have a little bit and not to mess with it because it is a natural defense mechanism so I did not. I just put Bacitracin on him and put his diaper on. Today, it still looks really red and irritated and is clearly still very sensitive. I did not try to clean it this morning and just put more Bacitracin ointment on it. I am terrified to touch it because I know how painful it must be for him. I wish I would have never had him circumcised!!! THIS SUCKS!!!!! What do I do to keep it from getting infected?? What is one suppose to do when this happens?? How do I prevent it from re-attaching without hurting him. I am clueless here!

We used lots and lots of bacitracin/vasaline...As a matter of fact, I gloped it on there. I would call your ped's on-call line for some additional help. Our ped gave us some specific instructions when our DS was having penis issues. I am not sure if they will help you, so I am not posting those. Hang in there....

To keep anything from reattaching itself to the penis, blob the Vaseline on the head of the penis (it's easier to blob it thick on a cotton pad, smear it around, and then place it on the tip) That way his diaper doesn't touch it. Also, do not wipe it! I only wipe my ds's penis when he's pooped all over. He's never had a rash and his penis isn't raw from the unnecessary wiping. If you want to clean his penis, take a bottle full of luke warm water and rinse it off. It takes about a week to heal, but it'll get better!

He is 11 months old. Thank you for the tips. I am off to the store to get some more Bacitracin ointment and vaseline. I have been keeping the Bacitracin on him since last night and I havent tried to wipe it clean since last night either, I have just been applying the ointment. I was just so freaked out about his pain and stuff. I still have my squirt bottle from when I had dd because she was a vaginal delivery. That is a great idea to clean it intokermit!! I would have never thought of that. I got a wash rag wet and streamed it over the top of it earlier, why didnt I think of the squirt bottle. I guess thats why I have these boards :) This is the closest thing to a rash that I have had to deal with him as he has never had a diaper rash. His poor penis is just raw looking, just around the underneath of the tip. He doesnt seem to be bothered when he urinates, thank God!!!!

I woudl call the pedi. What kidn of circ was that? Did they only take off half the foreskin? My ds had a bris at day 8 and there is nothing adhering to his penis in terms of foreskin. There is very small ring of lose skin but it's nothing that could come off... it's like the base of what was the foreskin.

I am taking him in at 6:00 pm tonight because he is feverish now so I am concerned about infection. The circumcision was done with a Gomco clamp. It was fine and I followed the instructions to the letter, but it ahdered anyway. It is not a bad case of adhesion from what his pedi said and he told me to leave it alone and it would pop loose at about 2-3 yrs on its own. So, I was very shocked when it happened. It is hard to describe the adhesion other than a little bit of the skin adhered to the bottom of his little head, you know, underneath the mushroom. There were 2 little spots that have always looked a little bit drawn away, like it did not adhere and I was wondering if bacteria could have collected in there and caused an infection, which is why he broke loose earlier. Boy is it red and irritated! He also still has quite a lot of foreskin even after his circumcision.

Hi,
I just wanted to say that my son had the same thing. I took him to specialists too. And they told me it would "correct" itself by the time he was 4-5yrs old. He just turned 6 last week and it did correct itslef last year. He still has irritation problems with it.(very itchy) He also had a lot of foreskin. (still does)
When my son had this problem there was no one i could talk to about it, because no one i knew had even heard of it.
I also used a LOT of vaseline. I use vaseline on my baby now and not a diaper rash cream. ( i find that it works better)
I hope your little one is feeling better. I know how horrible it is to see them in pain like that.

Thanks again ladies! I got back from the doc and they said that it looks as though it has had some sort of trauma along the side as if it had been pulled down forcefully. He kept insisting even though I told him that was impossible! My husband has been out of town since Friday and I am the only one that has been with my kids and am the only one to have changed his diaper. The only thing I could think of was that I always let him run around naked after his bath for about 1/2 hour to 1 hour and usually let him run around naked at some point during the day for the same amount of time, just to let him out of his diaper for a while. In letting him run around naked, he always pulls at his pee-pee here and there, but I never thought much of it, it is what all babies do. The doc said that he could have pulled it and it came loose that way. I dunno, I guess. I thought it happened when I was cleaning him but I never try to retract the skin like that. Anyway, it all boils down to the fact that it somehow came loose and has a little bit of an infection. I was told to give him antibiotics and keep antibiotic ointment on his pee-pee until it is better. Poor baby!

I feel for you. If I knew then what I know now, I would never have had him circumcized. I let DH decided since he has a penis, but I should have looked into it more. My ped said to keep it pulled back so every night I clean around it and apply vaseline. Unfortunately different peds have different takes on it, and I don't have any way to tell what is right. I hate, hate, hate that my baby has to go through that because I made an uninformed decision.
