I'm looking for a good, informative "all about poop" article for a new mom. Her newborn didnt poop for a few days and her Ped. recommended prune juice, suppository, etc. Alot of people consider "not pooping" as constipation. When the baby did poop it was soft, not formed-the newborn gets a little bit of formula supplements.
Anyway, I tried to explain that this isnt constipation...but thought maybe some "official" info might help. Thanks!

This is the only one I have in my favorites.
A thermometer can also work instead of the suppository. I would try that: taking her temperature rectally.
It could also be the babys norm not to poop every day. How old is the baby?

That's a good one. But I think it's important for her to know that going every 2 weeks can also be normal for a BF babe.

This addresses infrequency of pooping being normal

thanks.
The baby was born on 4/26, 4 weeks early. Had some jaundice and weight issues... she's trying to get her off the supplements/bottles now, I think. Her supply seems good-she's been pumping and gets almost 2 ounces *after* a feeding, just gotta be confident in herself, I think. Someone told her to nurse every 3 hours, I told her to bump it up to every 2 or more/on demand and can take one 4 hour break in the middle of the night, if she needs to. I told her that if the baby is trying to gain that weight back/growing alot, she might just be utilizing all that she is getting, hence the slow down in poops. My kids went days without pooping after the first couple of weeks. It drove me crazy with my first one, but I didnt let it bother me with DS2. So I understand her concern....this being her first baby and all. She said baby's tummy was kinda hard and she was grunting. I told her that it takes alot of effort for babies to figure out what muscles to use and yes their bellies might be full when they need to poop, but as long as the poop is soft, its not constipation.
I printed the articles and took them down to her house-thanks.
