I've been between pumping and breastfeeding for 3 weeks now. Due to sleep deprivation and frustration during breastfeeding, I've gone back to the pump for the time being. Since being pump exclusive since yesterday, the right side of my right breast is hard, feels like a huge lump and very sore to the touch and even now I can feel pressure and pain. Is it glandular???

I'm going to say it's a plugged duct. Apply warm dry heat to the area before pumping, and while pumping massage the area from the back to the nipple. The area will feel bruised for a few days, but if the lump is not gone in a few days, Id see your gyno. The plugged duct could lead to mastis. I wouldn't worry about that unless your come to that bridge. It'll get better. they're no fun, but you can clear that up!

Your pump is not as efficient as baby at removing milk from the breasts. I agree that it is a plugged duct.

Frequent hot soaks, hovering into a bowl of hot water for a minimum of twenty minutes, some circular massage and then try hand expressing some milk from the area. If you develop a fever, you really should seek professional help ASAP.

Your pump isn't strong enough for all day use unless it is a hospital grade pump. How about we help you with your frustration with some BFing issues?

Yup. Sounds like a plugged duct. A long bath, if you can cover the breast, might be more comfortable than bending over a bowl of water.

And the baby is better at getting milk out than a pump. Can we help you with the BF issues? There are lots of knowledgeable folks here.

I'm using the Egnell Elite by Ameda rented from a Medical Supply store. Should be as good as it gets or so I thought. Breastfeeding issues....where to begin. Baby changes latch during the feed resulting in pain and me getting severely irritated to the point where I don't want to continue. I feel the baby is needing to feed more frequently because I or he will break the latch prematurely. It hurts so bad just to get latched initially that I am in no hurry to start. I was just getting to the point of feeling really down about the whole thing - crying, zombie, fairly depressed. Since going back to just pumping I feel more positive about getting up in the night, baby sleeping longer, I feel better knowing how much he's getting at each feed, production was getting low and now coming back. Only problem is the plugged duct situation. I really want to breastfeed, don't get me wrong but feeling lousy is just not a good option just so that he's feeding from the breast. The LC in the hospital and the one that came to my home told me that the latch and everything I was doing was perfect and there are times that are better than others but it's just not 100% all the time. Do I run to the LC everytime I have a bad latch??
