my DS is 3.5...weight gain is good (9 lbs one oz at birth, 13 lbs at 3 months)...suddenly he's preferring to eat at the right more then the left...

Is this ok? is he still going to get the amount he needs? Other than being lopsided, (lol) is there any other big risk? thanks

** I did post this in the Ask a LC forum...just wanted to make sure.**

(they suggested i try and increase production on the other side just in case i need it as he gets older). Thanks ladies.

You can fully support a baby's needs with one breast (think about moms who nurse twins!), so no worries there! Milk production is demand-based, so more nursing from the rt. side will result in higher milk supply on the rt. side. Most babies have a favorite, BTW.

If you were interested in trying to get him to nurse more from the lt. side, you might try different positions. If he prefers the rt., you can try keeping him in the same position as though he's nursing on the rt. breast but put him on the lt. one while kinda slouching on the couch a bit. Support his head, but his body will mainly be laying on the cough next to you. Hope that makes sense. Have you tried side-laying nursing with him?

cheryl,

thanks for the input...DUH i didnt think of a woman w/ twins...I'd like to get him doing even nursing on both. We do side lying early mornings and most Mid days (nap time). He still seems to have a preference then.

also, IDK if this is possible...but when i pump (which isn't often) and sometimes when he nurses the left nipple will become white and callous like...but it rarely happens on the left...is this a concern IYO? maybe thats part of his preference? TIA!

This is what I did. Jack has had side preferences off and on. One time it will be the right for a few days then it will be the left.
