Ok... I am extremely confused about vit supps. in bf babies. All the research I'm finding is up until 6 months old. My little one is 6 and half months old currently and is exclusively breastfed and on solids (right now pears, sweet pot, peas, and carrots).

I called her ped about a vit D supp for her and she said yes and to come pick up samples. Well the samples are Vit D, A, and E with iron. Label says 100% Vit D, A, and E for infants in one dose and 67% iron. Is this really necessary for her? I know they need D supps but, isn't she getting too much A and E with her solids and being bf?

Please know... I am on a restricted diet due to her multiple food allergies. I eat steak, chicken, potatoes, fruits, veggies, salads, and fish. I do take hypoalllergenic prenatal vitamins and Vit D and Cal supplements for myself. So, with my prenatals are A and E and even iron necessary?

Please shed some light for me... what did you do with your little ones? Also, what about flouride supplements?

Thanks a lot ladies! I just don't want to give her too much of one thing... as this is def no good either!!!

Everything changed here, so I guess I'll post it on the other forum as well.

Too lazy to trot to the other forum and in actuality should be getting to work.

DD has only had vitamins a few times. When she was itty bitty and the doc said she needed them I did them twice and she didn't like them so I quit. Now she gets them if she is chewing on the bottle(doesn't happen often), she chews I ask do you want some of that and she'll take it. My doc also said that she was ok with me bf still as long as she gets the vit D. I'm not worried we get vit d from the sun and we spend a lot of time outside. How did people ever live before vit d supplements :)

Does your babe even need the Vitamin D? Are you way far north?

Odds are that your baby is getting everything she needs in your milk, even with your restricted diet. It's more likely that you'll be deficient than that your baby will suffer, that's just how it works. And with your prenatal vitamin, I wouldn't even worry about that.

I'd be concerned about the E and A as well. Too much of either can give you such a headache! Certainly you don't want that for your baby. And the iron just isn't necessary. If your doc is worried about iron, he or she should run a hemoglobin level. It's easy and inexpensive, there's no excuse for prescribing an iron supplement for a healthy BF baby without one.

I'd push back at your doc for a Vit D only supplement. (If you're way north, or somewhat north and dark-skinned.)
