Whenever you feel the time is right. My DD was exclusively bf for 7 months then we introduced a little bit of our food mashed up and she took to it. My ped said food for children under the age of 12 months is baically for play. The primary source of nutrition should be breastmilk or formula the first 12 mos.

Well, not WHENEVER, but within reason. Babe need to be *at least* 6 months and meeting developmental milestones.
See these links:

ITA with Red, wait at least until 6 months. Then go by your baby's cues. DS was not interested at all until he was 7 1/2 months. I kept trying from 6 months and everytime it was a struggle, as such I knew he wasn't ready. But boy, once he WAS ready, it was obvious he wanted to eat our food.
If your baby is reaching for the spoon, or just plain biting into it. It may just be a teething thing. When they are ready, they open wide and do not spit it up (at least the majority of the time!!! )
