Anyone have any thoughts on the homeschooling mommy in that movie?

I haven't seen the movie. What's up with the homeschooling mommy?

I usually don't catch movies until they come out on DVD/PPP. What's up with the homeschool mommy.

I can only imagine that it's some overblown stereotype at this point.

I cringed. That was my only dislike of the whole movie. They portrayed homeschoolers terribly imo.

Perhaps I'll boycott the movie, too, then. ;)

I don't really expect movies about Horton hearing a Who to portray homeschooling, politicians or even the medical establishment correctly.

I haven't seen it. We love the book, though.

Really? ;)

Yes, homeschoolers (pouch-schoolers) are closed/narrow minded weirdo zealot bad guys. It was such an eye opener that I've decided to hand DS back over to the govt run educational system. Actually when I googled I just rolled my eyes at the results. I'm just trying to figure out what kind of discussion Daisy is hoping to get from this pondering of hers. And I was right it's an overblown stereotype that is being used for the purpose of humour.

ETA: Directed at Cat not Sasha.

Pouch schoolers? So we're talking about marsupial education? Seriously?

What kind of discussion? Nothing in particular, just wondered if I was the only one who thought the implications about homeschoolers was negative and it was a shame to put it in a movie like that. The end result was good in that the child did what was right, but the entire movie the mom was the villian.

Daisy let me clarify, the movie used an overblown stereotype.

Pretty much. Not sure why you felt you had to clarify.

Honestly I wondered if the HS comments or the other agendas in the movie would come up on this board. ;) I thought for sure the pro life agenda would come up before the HS stuff though.

I only know one homeschool family who are Kangaroos.

Eh, Scientist aren't all mad, Hookers don't all really have a heart of gold, and Cops are not all rogue and on the take. It's movies. They take liberty with stuff.

I should also add that I thought about starting a topic about the HS comments and pro life stuff. I think it's an interesting topic and I wonder if stereotypes and agendas are appropriate for kids movies. We can understand it's a stereotype and form our own opinions on abortion but kids are easily influenced, especially by the media.

Actually Boho, I saw that (pro-life agenda) in my googling. It's kind of hard to gain a real opinion when I have seen the movie and have to use other peoples opinions. Which is near impossible seeing as I thought Siskel and Ebert was full of crap half the time.

Damn, I guess I'll have to watch the movie so that I can form my own opinions. Having said that, I think most young kids are "pro-life."
