I know it's a bit early for this but I figure if you need to upgrade windows/furnaces/insulation now is the time to plan for it. http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080601/heating_oil_prices.html

How many gallons did you use last winter?

around 150 a month when very cold, even keeping the temp at 58. and the oil company screwed up and delivered 525 or so gallons of oil instead of the 150 I asked for. we budget for the amount we use each month, so now we have lots of oil and a 1600 dollar bill, grrrr. plus two 500 dollar repair bills...in the warmer months we can go 5-7 months on 150 gallons.

I have no idea how much we used last year but we just put $1000 worth in our tank and we hope that, along with what was left over from last winter, will get us through along with our wood burning that we do. We already keep it at 58 at night and turning it to 63 during the morning is cranking it - otherwise keeping a fire going keeps the house in the mid to upper 60's. I called to find out how much propane was, and it was much cheaper ($2.25 per gallon vs. the $4.54 for heating oil) but since heating oil gives about 50% more heat per gallon, it's not quite as big of a difference - now anyway. I wonder what heating oil prices will do at $200/barrel oil prices vs. propane. Our furnace is ancient, so we may end up converting.

Propane is pushing $3 per gallon too. Last year we burned 6 cords of wood and still used 500 gallons of propane. This year, I've got 6 more cords stacked up and I'm just getting warmed up. If it takes me 20 cords to keep the money out of the hands of the Arabs, then it takes 20 cords. This oil racket is beginning to piss me off. God I wish people had enough sense to go nuclear. Sheesh.

With my horrible allergies, I can't burn wood, but I have to figure out a natural gas alternative for the winter.

THat really freaks me out- I know a lot of people who are going to be hard hit over that.

THe last contract I signed in VT before we left was 1.00 a gallon- We prebought 750 for our tiny house. My mom prebought 2k for their leaky old farm house. It would cost us more than 4 times that now? oh,my.
