I don't think calling people retarded is any worse than using words like idiot or ignorant.

They are all insults, one does not have any moral superiority over the others.

I know I'm jumping into this debate late. I just have to say that I don't use the word "idiot" because the word originates from "idiot savant" - the former medical term for a person who is autistic. I think the word idiot is just more normalized in our language.

I think we are just farther distanced from the origins of the word. I don't know about currently, but I know I grew up with kids who were told they were mentally retarded from an early age, both by doctors and their parents. Not in an offensive way, but as a simple term of diagnosis.
