Hi, my name is Vicky and I am breastfeeding mommy to 8 month old Cailyn. I return to my dr. on Thursday to discuss starting on anti-depressants for delayed ppd (unless blood work shows my problem to actually be hypothyroidism). Anyways, I am just looking for a recommendation on what meds are safe to use while BF. I talked to my daughters pediatrician and he gave me a list. He recommends anything in the SSRI chemical group. I am still just looking for further information before I have to go back to the dr. and make a final decision (if I indeed do have to start on anti-depressants). My dr. is pushing for me to take effexor but I am totally unsure about this one after talking with some friends and hearing their side effects (and they weren't even BF).
Thanks for any help,
Vicky

Dr Thomas Hale recommends any of the SSRI's. Do you have a history of depression?

I was on anti-depressants 10 years ago, but after having a reaction to zoloft (rash from head to toe) the dr. took me off meds and didn't try any others.

Prozac, Luvox, Paxil are a few that Dr. Hale lists as L2 ( L1 being the safest, but L2 is fine even for a younger baby. Effexor is an L3 and I would not recommend that.

Thank you very much. All the research I have done online led me to believe that effexor wasn't a great choice at all and I have had every intention of telling my dr. I am not taking that one. I thank you alot. You (along with my DD's pediatrician) has helped me alot. I'd rather make an informed decision than than the wrong decision.
Again thank you very much,
Vicky & Cailyn
