I am really getting fed up with sore nipples. "rant"
Now that my mastitis has cleared I had about 2 days of vitrually painfree nursing (except the Reynauds) and now my nipple, the same breast with the mastitis has yet another sore on it! Why, Why, Why????
The sore was actually coming off so I peeled it off and my nipple is really raw underneath. I let air get to it last night and expressed a little milk on it. I applied the miracle salve plus on it several times in the night and this morning.
What the heck is going on now????

 I feel your frustration SEF ~ I went thru something simular with dd1. Just when I thought I was getting a head of the game and was painfree - I would end up having even more issues. I hope you feel better and it heals quickly.

I'm right there with you. My daughter will be 13 weeks old tomorrow and I've had mastitis three times, one minor yeast infection and now I have a horrible yeast infection that is sooooo much more painful than the first one.
I have to keep reminding myself that it will get better and that it doesn't always hurt. :(

May I suggest a salt water rinse, using warm water. Not only will it help with the Raynaud's, but it will help the skin to heal. Salt Water Rinse (http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipplehealing.html) I hope you are feeling better soon!

did you take antibiotics with the mastitis?
is it yeast rearing it's ugly head?
I had sore nipples with my second child and it was like a mild case of yeast that just wouldn't go away, always a bit sore. I also think, in retrospect, it may have been that he has a very small, narrow palate.

Yes I was. That's what I was thinking it was so I started the GSE and it didn't help. It actually got worse. Maybe I will do a GV treatment this weekend. IDK you would think after 19 months of nursing, this wouldn't happen anymore.

This would be about my one millionth case. I think I have permanent thrush if there is such a thing :(

Oh no! Do you have regular Miracle Salve or Plus? Regular won't help yeast, but Plus will. You can try mixing a couple drops of GSE with the salve and applying that (or you could try using some OTC yeast cream like Monistat).

 My first suspicion was yeast as well, since you just had antibiotics.
Hang in there momma!

OUCH! Did the sore look like a white head or pimple? If so, it could be a clogged duct called a bleb.See:
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipplebleb.html
This could have been the original cause of your mastitis. Or is your nipple super pink or red? Could be a yeast infection. Check out: http://breastfeeding.hypermart.net/thrush.html
Often times, moms get yeast infections if they were on antibiotics for mastitis treatment. In any case, I would stongly suggest you get your OB/CNM to phone in a perscription for you called Canadian Nipple Cream (or APNO All Purpouse Nipple Ointment).

It works great. Ice on the nipple prior to nursing, helps numb the pain and swelling and warm moist tea bags afterward helps sooth the skin. Tanic Acid in the tea is what helps. Caffienated tea has more. Hope this helps!

"In some locations, wet tea bags remain a popular folk remedy for the treatment of nipple pain. They are inexpensive and can be found in most homes, making them easily accessible at the onset of difficulties. They may be soothing because of the moist warmth. Tea bags have been the subject of a number of studies; they appear neither to prevent nor reduce nipple soreness (Lavergne 1997). Furthermore, the tannic acid in the tea can act as an astringent causing drying and cracking, rather than healing."

Are you using your silverette? Are you taking any probiotic? If not, it is time to get on one for long term use.
I hope you feel better soon!

To answer Kerry, yes I am using the Miracle Salve Plus. It is helping, I will mix some GSE in it. I wasn't sure if I could do that.
To answer Nipple_Nectar, I am on probotics. I do wear my silverettes when I can but not as much as I should, I know that.
It's not bleeding, just real raw. I don't remember a milk blister or anything like that but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. I am just making sure to keep in empty and clean so I don't get mastitis again.
I don't want to go back to the LC for this (for reasons most of you know). Last time I talked to her (last week)she was just so rude so if I show up there again, who knows how she will be this time.

I am one that is really prone to yeast infections. My doc told me that eating sweets or things with lots of refined sugar will up my chances for a yeast infection. Whether it be down there or on my nipples. I've cut out all sweets, and watch how much refined sugar I'm eating in normal foods, and I've noticed that my yeast isn't out of control. If you think that you have a chronic yeast infection, maybe you should cut out sugar.

I might die if I do this :mhihi: Just kiddin'
Your right. When I did cut out all the refined sugar I did notice the yeast wasn't as bad. I am going to do that again. Probably this weekend since it's grocery store time anyhow.

I am so sorry you had a bad experience with your LC. I have met several like that and it frustrates me because it gives the nice ones like me a bad rap. I can assure you, I have never had a mom that thought I was rude, not in all 11years. Hope you mom's out there are happy with me (as an LC) joining the community......You all are excellent at diagnosing and treating! I know you really don't need me but I like to help too (it's my nature to nurture).
