*sigh* it's been a really long night.

We were out on the front porch enjoying the weather and letting the kids do some sparklers when all of a sudden ds1 (who is 9) started jumping around and screaming and completely freaking out. I thought he burnt himself or something so I ran over to him to take a look. I didn't see anything and he was still freaking out so I sat him down on the porch. When he finally calmed down enough he screamed at me "Theres a bug in my ear!!!!!"

WHAT? a bug.....?.....in your ear?.......I git the flash light and shined it in ds's ear, and there was definitley a bug in there. I didn't know what to do so we went to the ER. ds has a very extensive history of problems with his ears so I didn't want to mess with it myself.

He freaked out the whole time, saying he could feel it moving, and it sounded like a helicopter in his ear. we waited forever to see the doctor and when we finally did ds was a little calmer.

Yep, there is a bug in his ear. the doctor stared blankly like he didn't know what to do next. When I asked how he planned to get it out he just told me he'd be back. Maybe he had never seen this before? I heard him asking nurses in the hall what the heck they should do.

They ended up putting some kind of numbing medicine in his ear and it killed the bug, then they took a really long pair of tweezers and a scope and pulled him out.

Ugh.....I get the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.

We finally got hom around 2am and ds1 is now sleeping peacefully. Poor guy, he always gets the shaft. Im supposed to follow up with the ped this afternoon. I have to say, I am glad it wasn't something worse, but that is the strangest reason I have ever gone to the ER for.

I would love to say I wouldn't have gone to the ER but I just don't know. I would have had the heebee jeebee's as well (shudder). Maybe some diluted peroxide would have killed it?

As far as the sparklers go, I really hate the darn things. I was trying to light some for the kids last year (I hold them in thier hands) and I burnt the crap out of my finger. I had to keep ice on it for at least 2 hours to get the burn out. Unless I can find the really long ones and we put them in the grass I will be skipping those from here on out.

I didn't want to go to the ER, but I didn't really know what else to do. In hindsight we probably could have tried some peroxide or something but ds was freaking out so bad, and was in pain because the thing was pretty much sitting on his eardrum.

Oh man. I would have FREAKED if there was a bug stuck in my ear and I could hear and feel it moving. I can't imagine!

And don't feel bad for having to bring him to the ER.... I mean, the ER doctor didn't even know what to do at first! :p

Ewww. I saw this show once (one of those incredible stories ones on Discovery) with this woman that had a bug stuck in her skull. She had to wait until the next day or something like that to get it out! I would have scalped myself at that point.

I have had a bug in my ear before. It hurt like hell and I had to go to the doc to get it out. He told me I could have just poured water in my ear and drowned the bun then tilted my head and it would have fallen out. I much prefer going to the doc to have it done to make sure the bug is for sure out!

I consider a bug in the ear ER worthy if it's after office hours.

I've seen that on medicall tv shows twice. Poor kid. Your doctor did exactly what I saw before. Squirt in the lidocaine, which kills the bug and numbs the ear, and then take the bug out.

And I think that going to the ER was very reasonable because the two I saw were adults and they were really freaking out and barely able to control themselves and your son is just a kid. There's no way someone should have to suffer that until their doctor's office opens the next day.
