I'm near completing breastfeeding my daughter after an amazing year and was wondering what impact it may have on me/my body/emotions, etc., if any? Thanks.

Many if not all mothers go through a grieving process when they wean. We have to wonder if children do the same. It is a huge loss. Many cultures let their babies wean naturally when they are ready which is usually 2 1/5 to 3 years.

I appreciate your time, though your response left me feeling terribly guilty. Just yesterday I was celebrating with my husband my commitment and dedication to breastfeed our daughter for her first year in spite of the challenges presented by a demanding job. Regardless of the room there is to increase the number of U.S. women who breastfeed their children, shouldn’t we applaud those that are able to make the commitment for no matter how long, rather than making them feel guilty that they stopped prematurely and should hang on for another year and-a-half to two years?

I think you have done an incredible job. Probably only about 2% of babies in America get as much breastmilk as you have given to your baby. I am sorry. I was only trying to answer your question. I in no way meant to make you feel guilty. Most mothers feel a loss when they or the baby wean even if the child is 5 years old--it is just the natural response to ending that era of your life. Please accept my apologies.
