I have been breastfeeding my son for 3 months. Everything has been going great, except recently my nipples are sore. I pump twice a day at work and nurse him before work, at lunch and after work. What could be causing this, and how do I make them feel better?
I use a medela lactine select pump and use it at the lowest setting. My nipples still turn purple, and also when he nurses they look purple on the bottom. Does he have a bad latch?

Does he change the shape of the nipple? Are the breastshields big enough to allow the nipple to move freely inside?

They dont change shape when he nurses and just a little of my areola goes into the shield. Do I need bigger ones?

Have you tried a smaller size?

No, I just have the standard size.

DO you have a lactation consultant near by that can help you get properly fitted?

We have one in the hospital that I could talk to. Would the lady that rents them out know what size I need?

She should know; check with her.

So a smaller size will help them not be sore or purple?
Why would this happen after 3 months of everything being fine?

Well that's a good question. Were you pumping during those 3 months? If so then maybe it is something else. The pain is likely due to the blood vessels going into a spasm. Applying dry heat when the baby or pump comes off the nipple are squeezing the nipple gently to restore blood flow. Without seeing you this is the best I can do.

Thanks for all your help! I'll check with the LC here and see what she has to say.
