My baby is eight days old. I am really having a hard time. One of my nipples is fine but the other was bleeding on Saturday--I didn't know until the baby spit up blood. Isn't that horrible? I felt like a terrible mom. What I did then was continue to feed on the other side and only pumped on that side.

Was that an appropriate response?

Then I went back to using both the next day, afraid that my supply would be compromised if I didn't. I am using lanolin on both nipples and that seems to really help--wasn't doing that before.
He latches on better on that preferred side, but is getting better on the other side.

Will this get better soon?

I'm exhausted. My husband has a cast on his arm and can't help with the diapering or dressing...and of course, feeding is all mine too, so I'm just having a hard time with it all. And I'm thirsty and hungry a lot and not very able to cook or shop much.

I should be enjoying the baby and yet, I am just overwhelmed.

Thanks,
amanda

I can see why you are overwhelmed. your plate is overflowing. You need a lactation consultant. Where do you live?

I live in Granite Falls, NC. It is very close to Hickory, a little bigger city.

My sister lives in Hickory and my parents are in Lincolnton! Small world. go to www.ilca.org and put in your zipcode to locate an IBCLC near you. If you have any problems finding one please email me privately at debbie@thenewbornbaby.com

I want you to be pain free!!

Does it cost much to consult with one? If so, I just need to wait a few days.

Your hospital may offer a free outpatient clinic so check with them. Also, the La Leche League is a volunteer group and does not cost anything.
