My daughter is 5 1/2 months old. I was wondering about how many times a day she should be eating now. At first she was eating every 3 hours, however she can go longer now. I am trying to stop watching the clock and start feeding her when she seems hungry. Is there an average though so I know she is still eating enough?

Also, how long should she be eating for? She will suck vigourously for about 3 minutes, and then she will suck slowly-sometimes I think she is eating, other times I think she is just soothing herself.

Thanks!!

Breastfeeding is not an exact science as you probably know. Babies at this age are usually efficient at empying the breast and get distracted while nursing, cutting sessions shorter. As long as she is satisfied, gaining atleast 4 oz a week (roughly) and happy, you're fine.
She may nurse for comfort/soothing too. Which is great if it's ok for you.
Great job!
