DD is getting ready to start kindergarten in August (I can hardly stand it..she is already a school girl *weep weep*) We have not received the booklet that informs you of what the necessary supplies are to start and I do NOT want to wait until it comes because then everybody will be crazy in the stores and there will be nothing left. So, those of you who have been there, what are the supplies that I can start getting now?

Here is what I have already purchased:

Backpack
Lunch box
Cool pack

Things I assume she will need:

Elmers glue or glue stick
Pencil & sharpener (the thick ones or regular?)
Crayons
Scissors
Ruler
Paper (what kind?)

Any other tips would be great!!

It has been a long time, my oldest is eight and the youngest is 4 months. Anyway, my daughter's school has a website and they list the supplies on there. So, if the school has a website you can check it to see if they have it listed on there.

you could get both pencils and one of those sharpeners that have two sides with different sizes.
i have a friend that's a kindergarten teacher....she only really appreciates when kids can either tie their shoes or wear velcro ones.
but get her some of those cute erasers. just because...i always felt cool when i had them. maybe a folder too. something to keep her work in? or bring it home in.

FWIW, when my sis was in K, they had to have triangular shaped pencils one bought from the school store.
She also had to have folders from school store
Don't forget tissues, most schools now ask each kid to bring some LOL.

Call your school and get the school supply list, seriously. Save yourself the questions and wondering. For instance, ours wants kids to have the 8 pack of crayons, plus a pink one. Just little things like that make a difference.

Our K kids need: pencil box, box of tissues, pencils, crayons, scissors (and they're picky about what kind), glue stick. That's it.

But our school puts out a supply list for all grades; give yours a call, or check their website.

yes you may need folders, generally they prefer bottom pocket folders. maybe a mrable notebook or two.

Where I live the Wal-Mart (and lots of other stores too) have the different school supply lists for all the different grades available at the store.

I agree with Red though...just call the school and ask for a supply list. Or check their website. There's no point in guessing because the lists are usually pretty specific about some of the stuff. For example, one year my boys needed dry-erase markers...a specific brand...because the school had just been built and had white boards rather than blackboards.

For us we also had to supply hand soap and sanitizer and some cleaning supplies. But I would call the school, that way you don't get anything they don't need or that you can't use.

If it comes down to me providing things like that or the teacher paying for it out of his/her pocket, I'll gladly spend $4 for some hand sanitizer.

You'd be amazed what ISN'T funded at our schools. It sounds nice, taxes covering everything, but that isn't the case in most schools. Sad, but true.

You wouldnt believe the supply list for Kindergarten that is hanging on my fridge.

6 boxes of crayons
markers
colored pencils
20 glue sticks
supply box
backpack
antibacterial soap
hand sanitizer
box of tissues
scissors
elmer's glue
dry erase markers
sandwich and gallon ziplocs
box of bandaids
2 highlighters
2 reams of copy paper
and a $20 "activity fee"

I really don't mind getting all that, but I can't believe how little the school district actually helps these teachers with. I have to wonder what happens with the kids who's families can't afford all this stuff?

Wow, that is a lot! Damn!

Most schools that have a larger supply list like that, have a fund that helps out families in need. Or, when supplies are brought in, often they'll ask for extras, to put in a closet, until needed.

1 or 2 families may send in everything on the list. MOST families are going to send in SOMETHING off that list. SOME families aren't going to send anything at all.

So it balances out so those who didn't send anything or didn't send much to have almost enough stuff for the kids for the school year.

In the county where I live they just had to get rid of 200 hundred teachers, and the ones that stayed on just found out that they have to take a 20% pay cut, oh also, they closed 5 schools in our county.

We are supposed to have some of the lottery money going to the school budget but I've yet to see it over the past 10 or so years.

I have always said that I don't mind buying extra for kids whose families can't afford it, but what they do here is they tell the parents not to write your child's name on any of the supplies and then it goes into one closet and then randomly passed out.

Our school supply list cost at least $100 for each of our girls.
